December 2015 Report

Greetings, {podling} developers!

This is a reminder that your report is due next Wednesday, December
2nd. Details below.

Best,

Marvin Humphrey, Report Manager for December, on behalf of the
Incubator PMC

---------------

Dear podling,

This email was sent by an automated system on behalf of the Apache
Incubator PMC. It is an initial reminder to give you plenty of time to
prepare your quarterly board report.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wed, 16 December 2015, 10:30 am PST.
The report for your podling will form a part of the Incubator PMC
report. The Incubator PMC requires your report to be submitted 2 weeks
before the board meeting, to allow sufficient time for review and
submission (Wed, December 2nd).

Please submit your report with sufficient time to allow the Incubator
PMC, and subsequently board members to review and digest. Again, the
very latest you should submit your report is 2 weeks prior to the board
meeting.

Thanks,

The Apache Incubator PMC

Submitting your Report

----------------------

Your report should contain the following:

*   Your project name
* A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of
the project or necessarily of its field
* A list of the three most important issues to address in the move
    towards graduation.
* Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be
    aware of
* How has the community developed since the last report
* How has the project developed since the last report.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/December2015

Note: This is manually populated. You may need to wait a little before
this page is created from a template.

Mentors
-------

Mentors should review reports for their project(s) and sign them off on
the Incubator wiki page. Signing off reports shows that you are
following the project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms
for the Incubator PMC.

This version of the report looks better. Signed off at the wiki.

Thanks,

Posted by Suresh Subbiah <su...@gmail.com>.
Hi,

Thank you very much for the review and suggestions. A version with all
comments incorporated is at https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/December2015

and have learnt much from our mentors so far.
Mentors, please sign the report if you agree.

Thanks
Suresh

Hi,

Thanks, Suresh, for this report draft.

+1 on the draft and the comments so far.

Though I'm not sure I'd use the word "invest" as that points to economic
interests in developing the project that perhaps aren't relevant. Phrasing
such as "much effort has gone into simplifying the install and build
processes" might be better.

Re: December 2015 Report

Posted by Pierre Smits <pi...@gmail.com>.
Hi All,

I believe the project is on the right track. It may not be as fast moving
as some would like, but it is moving forward. It is not a race... And that
is a good thing. The project (community) is growing!

That our attempt to get a first release out didn't succeed, is not
worrisome. It happened to numerous other podlings and will happen again. It
is a path to be travelled and we learn from it. With the availability of a
released product (when it has happened) we will be even more able to put
the word out there through various means. Enthusing even more potential
adopters 'and' contributors.

The future is looking bright.

Best regards,

Pierre Smits

RE: December 2015 Report

Hi Suresh,

> How has the project developed since the last report?

I would add that as part of the effort towards the first release, we have
done a significant amount of work to simplify the Trafodion build process as
well as enhance the build instructions. We have also invested in making the
installation more user-friendly and robust.

+1 on St.Ack's suggestion on "develop and diversify ..."

IMHO streamlining the incubator website so it is easy for new contributors
to on-board is another important issue.

Atanu

Could say that your mentors have been missing in action but that there has
been renewed avowals that mentors will do better going forward?

Hi,

Some items that could go into our December report:

1. New committers/PMC members (Hans Zeller, Anoop Sharma, Selva
Govindarajan)

2. Our first attempt at a release, for which we got much valuable
feedback. We are currently addressing the issues and getting ready to try
again. Many thanks to our release manager, Roberta Marton and all the
folks dealing with the issues.

3. A website revamp is in progress.

4. Lots of JIRAs, pull requests, commits, e-mails and so on. I imagine
Suresh can get the numbers.

5. We should take a look at our diversity too.

6. Perhaps we should evaluate ourselves against the maturity model and
include that as part of our report?

Your report should contain the following:

*   Your project name

Signing off reports shows that you are following
the project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms for the
Incubator PMC.
