Updating the website
Hi All
It seems that at the moment, only Glen can update the whole website, but
that there are a few bits Andrew is the actual owner of. All the files on
the website are group owned by jakarta, but it's a bit random if the
files+directories have group write permissions.
What do people think of the idea of requesting a jakarta-poi unix group
from infrastructure? Glen + Andrew could then ensure that all the files
were owned by the new group, and had group write permissions on them.
After that, any poi committer (who'd be a member of the jakarta-poi group)
would be able to update the website. (We might need some ant magic to
ensure any new files did continue to hold group write permissions, but
that shouldn't be too hard)
Does that sound sensible to people, and if so, shall I speak to
infrastructure to try and organise it?

Just used that for testing. Its gone now.

Alas not all of the directories have the correct permissions yet, though
all the files now seem to
The hslf directory doesn't have 775 mode, and quite a few bits of apidocs
don't either (find . -type d ! -perm 775 in the directory should show
them)
Could you check your directory group permissions script, and also fix
those that are currently still wrong?

I fixed all files to have g+w and dirs g+x which I own or have group
permission to. If Glen does this:
ssh -l glens cvs.apache.org
cd /x1/www/jakarta.apache.org/poi
find . -type f -exec chmod g+w '{}' ';'
find . -type d -exec chmod g+x '{}' ';'
Then we should have a short term solution
For a long term solution:
infrastructure,
Please set the sticky group bit (aka 2000) on the poi dir (above) and
subdirs and make me owner of everything including the directory (I am
ever present and can always delete files if needed). Let me know if
there is an issue.

Technically Jakarta is the project and all committers are theoretically
Jakarta committers, it is only that Jakarta organizes itself
differently. Moreover, infrastructure probably is in the "kill Jakarta"
and "become a top level project" camp.
My own viewpoint is that being top level really offers us nothing and
looses valuable branding. Worse it adds the necessity to maintain a
private PMC list which tends to assume the bulk of discussion. While I
do not share this view, a cynical view is that killing Jakarta as a
brand serves certain large interests in that Jakarta is a powerful brand
in Java and until recently was a more powerful brand than Apache in
Java. I believe there was a desire to create a more cohesive Apache and
this was seen as part of the way. I however do not think one has
anything to do with the other.
At one time I had an automated script running the website but I was
asked to shut it down.

Yes, but it would mean that any jarkarta committer could update the site,
which isn't ideal. But, it might have to do (if the infrastructure team
aren't keen on creating new unix groups)
If we do decide to stick with just jakarta permissions: Glen, can you fire
off these commands on cvs.apache.org?
cd /www/jakarta.apache.org/poi
chown -R .jakarta .
find . -type d -exec chmod 2775 {} \;
find . -type f -exec chmod 0664 {} \;
(That'll ensure everything is group owned by jakarta, set the directories
to group write with group sticky bit set, and set the files to group
write)

Usually we try to keep all files group(jakarta) writable.. I'm not sure
how receptive the infra group will be about a new unix group. Your
suggestions below would work with group jakarta, no?
