As of today 24th Nov 2016 the problem still exists with:
Python 2.7.12
Cassandra 3.6
Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Temporary fix is:
apt-get install python-pip
pip install cassandra-driver
export CQLSH_NO_BUNDLED=TRUE
