Let's copy the Eclipse logo usage document

Hi,
We should have one, single, clear, authoritative document / web page
where we outline or logo usage guidelines.

Assuming everyone agrees with the above, I say we copy the Eclipse one
at http://www.eclipse.org/legal/logo_guidelines.php and tailor it to
our needs and circumstances.

This is not my original idea: J Aaron Farr brought it up last year,
and we've gotten legal permission on record from Janet Campbell at
Eclipse: see http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-legal-discuss/200607.mbox/%3C20060720132718.0BC2010E6@foundation.eclipse.org%3E
for the mailing list thread.

Do we agree this is a good idea and a decent path to follow?
Obviously we'll all collaborate on the text of the page and keep
legal-discuss in the loop.

Yoav

In the document, we say

"The appropriate trademark symbol (i.e. TM) should appear at
least with the first use of Apache trademarks and all
occurances of the Apache logo."

Before putting this document into effect, should we do this ourselves?

No, it's not online yet. I would love it to be, but the reason I
didn't put it online is because there was no discussion following my
committing the document. I felt unconfortable effectively setting
Apache policy by myself without feedback.

Is this document available online? I have a relevant question pending
for human-response@.

If not, my suggestion would be to add an entry for "Logos" under the
list of Foundation pages.

I've just committed it to foundation/legal/Policies/logo-guidelines.xml

Comments and suggestions welcome (and needed).

I've got an initially xdoc written up, but I'm not sure where to put
it. Any suggestions?

Also, as soon as I started writing it, a number of good points came
up:

What actual trademarks does the ASF own? Do we actually have a
trademark for, say, "Apache Struts"

What logos are acceptable to use? Part of the reason I wanted this
document is that I don't think we have any logos that are clearly
available for other parties to use. Some projects have "Powered By"
logos. Do we need to collect all of those? We're going to need to
issue some direction to the PMCs.

FWIW, the PRC has already agreed that the concept makes a
lot of sense.
