Indexing HTML Meta Tags

I would like to index some fields from the META tags in my HTML
documents. I noticed the NUTCH-422 patch provided a plugin that looks
like it (maybe) does this, but then it sounded like the standard nutch
search plugins might not support searching for these fields? Is my
understanding of this correct?
 
Am I over complicating this? Has anyone else had any luck indexing and
searching META tags?
