[VOTE] - Relase Apache Clerezza 0.2-incubating

Hi all,

this is the third vote to release Clerezza parent and all the modules in
the release profile.

The source zip and the signatures for this third RC are available here:

http://people.apache.org/~reto/clerezza-release-201112/

As binary distribution the tdb-launcher self executable jar is also
avalable, with the resolution of CLEREZZA-641 future release will
contain this binary zip instead.

In svn the release version is tagged parent-0.2-incubating

[ ] +1 Yes, please release
[ ] +0 No time to review
[ ] -1 Something wrong

Regards,
Reto

Hi Reto,

FYI the source release compiled fine on my machine with 'mvn clean install'.

Best,

Hi Reto,

I had a look at the source release. I found two issues but I don't
think that these are blocking issues.

1) Missing podling DISCLAIMER file [1]
2) Missing top level README that tells me what to do and how to
compile Clerezza.

Now I tried with

java -Xmx512m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -jar -Dfile.encoding=utf-8
platform.launcher.tdb-0.5-incubating.jar

but still have the same errors

HI Enrico

This sounds like a known encoding problem, it doesn't occur when
starting with -Dfile.encoding=utf-8

Yes, that problem disappeared after deleting the cache, but then the
previous one re-appeared.
Anyway I will report it on jira.

Re: [VOTE] - Relase Apache Clerezza 0.2-incubating

Posted by Enrico Daga <en...@gmail.com>.
Hi Reto,in the meantime I tried compiling from sources. Compilation
went fine, but starting the tdb executable (the compiled one) still
reports the same errors.I am on mac os-x snow leopard with sun jvm
1.6.0_29.
Will open an issue on jira.

Thank you

Enrico

It looks similar to CLEREZZA-387.

So the encoding problem disappeared but only after deleting felix-cache?

The problem below seem to be caused by a service that couldn't be
initialized. It would be good if you could open an issue and attach
the log to it.

I did it, the clerezza log looks good, no exception except some at
debug level. Now I got 404 on /clerezza and at localhost:8080 the
following exception:

org.wymiwyg.wrhapi.HandlerException:

Then I tried once again (cleaning log and felix-cache again), and I
got now tons exceptions, the initial ones are:

Hi Enrico,

Thanks for testing the release cadidate.

It sound like something went wrong at initialization. Could you try
again after deleting the felix-cache folder and see if any warning or
error is written to clerezza.log while starting? (Some debug level
exception message are nothing to worry about).

Cheers,
Reto

Hi Reto,
I have downloaded the tdb-launcher executable.
Then, following [1], I cannot navigate to the clerezza dashboard, I
have this message instead:

 User anonymous does not exist in the system graph

Is there anything I have to do before accessing the web tool?

If it's possible, a readme file aside the downloadable files would
also be helpful.

Thank you!

Enrico

I've added

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/clerezza/trunk/parent/DISCLAIMER

Is that ok?

Somebody should make sure this file is contained is source and binary
distro (the zip should now work).

Dear Reto,
I cannot reproduce my problem today. I tried again from scratch and
everything went well :)

I closed the issue opened yesterday, to not block the releasing process.

Thank you

Ok, so as json simple is apache licensed without notice file we should
not mention them. (Don't quite understand the logic of the apache
license which allows the content of the notice to alternatively be
included in the documentation or other places, and if this is the case
a derivate of the derivate no longer has the content of the notice).

I'll remove the suff from the file.

No, the NOTICE file should only list *required* notices, as it puts a
burden on whoever might redistribute the code. So if you have some
cleanup to do anyway, you could minimize that one unless what's in
there is required.

No, I didn't change anything that could be related to duplicate notice.

This problem with the NOTICE files has been introduced by inheriting
from the apache parent. It is not related to the release plugin which
takes remote resources from jar-resource-bundle
(org.apache:apache-jar-resource-bundle:1.4).

For reasons I don't completely understand adding the the following
plugin configuration to the clerezza parent

<plugin>
		        <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
		        <artifactId>maven-remote-resources-plugin</artifactId>
		        <executions>
		          <execution>
		            <goals>
		              <goal>process</goal>
		            </goals>
		            <configuration>
		            </configuration>
		          </execution>
		        </executions>
		      </plugin>

Has the effect that the NOTICE file in the project folder is used when
available and the auto-genrated NOTICE file is only used when no
NOTICE file is in the project root.

I've committed this change and I think with that things are fixed with
reagards to NOTICE and license.

I haven't yet checked if the DISCLAIMER file has also to be added to
the binary distribution or to the jars.

Reto

Unfortunately it didn't worked as hoped. Even if the file next to the
pom is named "NOTICE" (rather than "NOTICE.txt") the NOTICE-file added
to META-INF is an auo-generated one and not the one in the project.

Hi Fabian

Tanks for your comment.

I was unaware of this possibility to automatically generate NOTICE
files. I think thanks to this we could remove most of them. For now
I'll check if things work if I just rename the from NOTICE.txt but
leaving them in the current place.

Hi Reto,

I assume that you want to add additional information to the generated
NOTICE file. An example how to do this using the apache-release plugin
can be found here

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/stanbol/trunk/owl

You will find the following file:

src/main/appended-resources/META-INF/NOTICE

The content of this file is automatically appended (by apache-release)
to the generated NOTICE file. This way you can customize the NOTICE
files for each module. I think this is a generic mechanism that allows
you to append additional information to any file in META-INF but I
have not tested it with other files than NOTICE.

Best,

It seems that NOTICE.txt is added because its in our source tree and
NOTICE as per the source assembly descriptor inherited from the
parent.

Any suggestion on how to fix this? I know little about the assembly
plugin. An easy fix would be to remove NOTICE.txt or rename it to
NOTICE.

No, I don't even see both of them in the current trunk. Did you change
something to resolve this issue?

I can't see it there yet.

Ok, I'll rollback, which gives also the opportunity to fix the issue
Tsuy brought up. (That's the one I know how to fix, if anyone knows
more about the problem Enrico has, please step forward!)

and probably also the folder name in the zip, but the we have a
problem with the version number as this one only refers to the version
of the parent. For the tag in svn I think we could just use the date
but I wouldn't know how to do this with the assambly plugin.

I though I've eventually got rid of them, but apparently reintroduced
them by reactivating editing in the discobits editor.

Isn't it just good practice to indicate the source of copyright owner
of included code in NOTICE.txt? The json simple one seems
unnecessarily verbose though.

Could be, if nothing else is using port 8100 it might not have been
freed from an earlier test

It would be good to start a new thread for a new vote IMO, I almost
missed this one ;-)

I checked parent-0.2-incubating-source-release.zip (md5
811fa4644fbab6fac89239d280f3d5cc).

Signatures match, key is provided in
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/clerezza/trunk/KEYS

The required incubation DISCLAIMER was missing, I've just added it at
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/clerezza/trunk/DISCLAIMER

So -1 on the release, unfortunately, until that's fixed.

I also have a number of minor points:

1) The release archive should be named clerezza-something and not
parent-something.

2) At the root, both NOTICE and NOTICE.txt are present, only one
should be there.

3) Running RAT with "mvn -P rat verify" reports 44 unapproved
licenses, the exclusions list in parent/pom.xml probably needs some
adjustments.

4) The svn tag http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/clerezza/tags/parent-0.2-incubating/
matches the archive content, but contains two stray files:

in osgi.services: maven-eclipse.xml
in shell: maven-eclipse.xml

(minor problem really, mentioning it because I saw it)

5) Is the notice in ext.org.json.simple/NOTICE.txt really required?
Unless I missed something, http://code.google.com/p/json-simple/
doesn't seem to require it.

6) mvn3 build failed the first time with errors like
Running org.apache.clerezza.platform.typehandlerspace.TypeHandlerSpaceTest
62 [main] INFO org.apache.clerezza.triaxrs.JaxRsHandler - Binding
application config:

145 [main] INFO org.eclipse.jetty.util.log - Started

already in use

That's on a fairly fast box, so maybe timing-related.

Restarting with mvn install -rf platform.typehandlerspace, the build passes.

That's with Maven 3.0.3, java version "1.6.0_29", macosx 10.7.2

Thanks for preparing the release!
