You should pay close attention to release mechanics while doing this, there is a "release" plugin for mvn that you probably want to use. 

Take a look at whirr: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/WHIRR/How+To+Release

Whirr doesn't use the release plugin however we have looked at it and it's on the roadmap.
