Looking for help in the upcomming release

The Cocoon Project is working very hard to release 2.0.4 by Wednesday,
December 4.

To meet this goal -- which clearly will benefit all users -- we need
some *specific* QA (quality assurance) input from the user community.

To help, here's what you need to do:

1. Update your local CVS repository to the *latest* 2.0.4 branch
   version from CVS.

2. ./build.[sh|bat] clean

3. ./build.[sh\bat] -Dinclude.webapp.libs=true webapp (or webapp-local)

4. Assure that you use the same JDK for running Cocoon that you also
   used for building.

5. Test *all* samples. Hit each and every sample page from links
beginning at http://127.0.0.1:8080/cocoon/samples/

6. Report back here on your findings, good or bad.

7. Make sure you describe your test environment: Platform and JVM,
including version numbers.

8. If you find problems, be specific about the problem description: what
   page, what error, etc.

9. If you can provide a patch/info to fix the problem, even better.

What we do *not* need:
Please do not submit requests for XYZ features, dreams, etc. Please save
these ideas for future versions.

Thanks.

The Cocoon Team

I am confused by this too ....

Also I am embarrassed to say (as I mentioned on this forum recently) I
have some minor additions to the LuceneSearch functionality in 2.0.3,
that I cannot test, because I cannot get 2.0.3 running under TomCat
4.1.12!

Which particular set of Jars do you have to move around to make this
combination work?

Thanks for any help

Your command seems right, but cocoon_2_0_4 branch name doesn't work.
(The error message is " Protocol error: uncounted data discarded".)
Please let me know the exact name of "2.0.4" branch. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Carsten, but did you mean 2.0.3 branch?

Otherwise, would you please explain the cvs command for checkout.
Is it ...
cd cocoon_2_0_4_branch
cvs -d :ext:crossley@cvs.apache.org:/home/cvs checkout -r
cocoon_2_0_4_branch xml-cocoon2

I could not find such a branch and so i have been doing
commits to "cocoon_2_0_3_branch".

No, I am not looking for particular Software, but rather for the tests
itself and if somebody has already started to write some for the Cocoon
samples.

Thanks

Did ever anyone start to write Web-Regression Tests for the samples, by
using WebTest, Jelly or whatever (or do some already exist)?

Maybe I can help on this.

Introduction: Matthew

Posted by Matthew Langham <ml...@s-und-n.de>.
Hi,

Carsten and I didn't have to think hard about who we would dedicate the book
to and I would just like to repeat it here:

"Dedicated to the Cocoon community we are proud to be a part"

And I am really moved by the vote. Thanks.

Before I introduce myself properly, let me first say that I am well aware
that I am not "your traditional alpha-geek committer" - but it is my strong
feeling that there is more to a successful open source project than just
code – and Cocoon shines because it has a lot of that "right stuff".

And so in the spirit of true committers :-):

My name is Matthew Langham, I will turn 38 in December (which probably makes
me one of the oldest committers around :-)) and married with 3 children. I
was born in Faringdon, UK but have been living in Germany since 1976, so I
consider myself to be a true European :-). My first computing experience was
with a VIC20 and Apple II back in 1980-something.

During the past 20 odd years I have learnt and written code in PASCAL,
BASIC,
COBOL, C, C++, JAVA (in order of appearance) with some 6502 assembler thrown
in for good measure. (Anyone remember squeezing your own code into the
zero-page on the VIC20 – because there was some memory there you could use?
Ah well….times change).

I wrote my first book in 1993 (on UUCP and this new fad called "Email"), my
second together with Carsten last year (one of the Cocoon books) and have
also written a number of articles on Cocoon and other open source related
subjects. I also speak as often as possible at conferences and other
gettogethers :-).

I first came across Cocoon in 1999 when we were looking for a Java XML
framework to use inside projects and I then proposed forming an open source
group inside S&N, the software company I work for. Luckily I was able to
convince the company to do this (something which was certainly unorthodox
back then) and since then my role has shifted from coding to leading a small
group of enthusiastic colleagues in our crusade to convince commercial
entities to adopt open source (especially Cocoon) for what they are doing.
And (again luckily) with increasing success.

I think this is currently the most exiting time of my "IT-Life". Why?
Because after nearly 20 years of working in a very anonymous world - getting
involved with open source and the communities has opened my eyes in many
ways - especially about putting the "community" back into the software
business, And as we move into times where more and more emphasis is being
put on cost reduction, support for standards and code reuse – what better
place could there be than inside the Cocoon community.

(Sorry this got so long :-))

Matthew

The "build docs" seems to work fine. I got
"BUILD SUCCESSFUL" and all the docs seem to
be there.

As to the installation there are no instruction for
installing with Tomcat 4.1 so I just dropped
the cocoon.war into tomcat's webapp directory
(as specified by 4.0.1b1 instructions)

RE: Looking for help in the upcomming release

Posted by Artur Bialecki <ar...@digitalfairway.com>.
The "build docs" seems to work fine. I got
"BUILD SUCCESSFUL" and all the docs seem to
be there.

As to the installation there are no instruction for
installing with Tomcat 4.1 so I just dropped
the cocoon.war into tomcat's webapp directory
(as specified by 4.0.1b1 instructions)

RE: Looking for help in the upcomming release

Thanks Artur. Do you get the same documents build errors
when you use the "build docs" target?

I do not get any of your problems:
Environment:
Linux 2.4.18-4 i686
jakarta-tomcat-4.0.1
Cocoon 2.0.3 branch 2002-12-01
Java Blackdown-1.3.1-02b-FCS

You seem to have some serious problem related to your
specific machine. It would be excellent if you can
start afresh and follow the installation.html page
explicitly.

If you notice any documentation flaws on the way, then
please tell.

Re: Looking for help in the upcomming release

Posted by Stuart Roebuck <st...@adolos.co.uk>.
The code compiled happily with:

./build.sh -Dinclude.webapp.libs=true webapp-local

Tomcat 4.1.16 (alpha)
Mac OS X 10.2.2
Java 1.4.1 (prerelease)

Attempt to access the home page, results in the error:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/apache/excalibur/instrument/Instrumentable

as per the "excalibur-datasource and avalon-excalibur doesn't fit"
discussion currently going on.

Stuart.

All fine, although please see a number of patches for minor errors that
I've just sent in.

One major problem: none of the SVG samples seem to work properly. I'm
digging around to try and find the cause.

Linux 2.4.18, JDK 1.3.1, Tomcat 4.0.6.

RE: Looking for help in the upcomming release

Posted by Hugo Burm <hu...@xs4all.nl>.
My results:

System:
Windows XP (no service pack)
Sun JSDK 1.4
Tomcat 4.12 (full, not the stripped one for people already having JRE 1.4)

I checked out a clean 2.0.3 branch, compiled it following the instructions
and installed the war in the Tomcat webapps dir. The size of the war is 13
Mb (that seems small compared to the war's that I did create before). When
starting Tomcat, the war is extracted. But when I try to access the first
Cocoon sample page, I get the errors listed below.
I copied the following jar's to <tomcat_home>\common\endorsed :
xalan-2.3.1.jar, xerxesImpl-2.0.0.jar, xml-apis.jar
I did purge the Tomcat work dir, and removed my cocoon dir in Tomcat webapps
before extracting the new one.

I did see the errors about HSQLDB in the console before, when my system
clock was pointing to the year 1970. Weird, but easy to solve. Now, my clock
is telling me it is Nov 28 2002. That must be OK.

My problems could be related to the fact that I compiled and installed
successfully 2.1dev before. But I did this "compiling and installing" many
times before, so I think I know most of the caveats. But may be I missed
one.

>From the listing below "org/apache/excalibur/instrument/Instrumentable" may
be the problem. Never heard of this class before.

RE: Looking for help in the upcomming release

Posted by IAS <ia...@apache-korea.org>.
I checked out compatibility of the upcoming release with
cactus-encounter downloaded from
http://www.iasandcb.pe.kr/2g/projects/cocoon-encounter.html
. (The version is 0.1 zipped one (the only one though. :-))
It works nice by just copying the extracted files to
TOMCAT_HOME/webapp/cocoon/samples/i18n, so I think you can update the
part the way you did on 2.0.3 with cocoon-encounter release.

Best Wishes,
IAS

Yes, your new tranaslations are present only in the HEAD version, because
they differ a little from what is in the 2.0.3 branch in dictionary keys and
I don't have possibility to correct them now. It'd be fine if you could
adapt your translations for 2.0.3 and post a patch to Bugzilla and maybe
also directly me.

Yup, looks ok to me. Except, of course, for one small thing ;-)

http://localhost:8080/cocoon/samples/welcome has the wrong href for the
slides link, should be ../slides/slides. Recenctly the text has been
updated but not the link.

Cool!

[Important] Any showstopper for 2.0.4 release? [was:Looking for help in the upcomming release]

Posted by Carsten Ziegeler <cz...@s-und-n.de>.
Hi Cocooners,

first of all many thanks to all who helped and gave feedback
in the last days for finalizing the upcomming 2.0.4.

As far as I see it, there are no showstoppers. There were
some installation problems, so perhaps updating the docs
would help here.

Am I right?

If there are no real showstoppers, I will release 2.0.4 on
thursday.

RE: Looking for help in the upcomming release

Posted by IAS <ia...@apache-korea.org>.
I checked out with "cocoon_2_0_3_branch" branch, and succeeded in
building by build.bat -Dinclude.webapp.libs=true webapp .

(Build and) Test Environment:
Intelx86
Windows 2000 professional with service pack 3 (Regional Setting is
Korean)
Sun JDK 1.3.1_05
Tomcat 4.0.6

http://127.0.0.1:8080/cocoon/samples/welcome works fine.

http://127.0.0.1:8080/cocoon/samples/i18n/ doesn't contain Korean,
Japanese, Chinese sections. (I guess HEAD branch has them.)

I'm looking forward to 2.0.4.

Subject: Looking for help in the upcomming release
