better integration with Apache Kafka

Hello

We've heard from some of you over the past couple of months that you'd
like to see better integration with Apache Kafka.  In that spirit I've
kicked of an as of yet fairly light feature proposal [1].

Please help us craft this to better fit your vision as appropriate.
