[jira] [Commented] (KNOX-848) Support for Apache Titan REST

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KNOX-848?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=15819752#comment-15819752 ]

Larry McCay commented on KNOX-848:
----------------------------------

[~Wancy] - this looks really interesting.

I would like a bit more description as to what usecases this integration targets.
I see that Titan can be used with a number of different integrations.

Are you primarily targeting the HBase backend with this?
Are there usecases for Titan that set it apart from what Phoenix/Avaitca offer - why choose one over the other?

I wonder if we might want to spin up a KIP (Knox Improvement Proposal) wiki page to describe these usecase and maybe even Database Improvements to flesh out all what is needed for Phoenix/Avatica, Titan and maybe others for existing things like Hive and HBase. It would be good to have as cohesive a story as possible for DB integrations with Knox. This could even be a set of release driving features as we have recently been doing with our KIPs. 0.12.0 for instance is targeting KIP-4 for KnoxShell Improvements.

I am a little concerned about our ability to test it in order to know that it works for committing it as well as at release time to ensure that it works for the community in the release.

For getting it committed:
I think that this would be a good example of a contribution that would benefit from a docker-compose environment that can deploy both Knox and Titan with some scripting or curl examples for using it.

For Apache releases we could continue to leverage that same environment but also the addition of a groovy script based sample in the samples directory would go a long way. Since this is a REST API and not JDBC based we may need client shell classes for it.

Thanks - I'm looking forward to some more details and a way to test this to get it in!
