I don't by the complexity and lightweight-ness arguments.  If one were after
that, a simple cookie-based approach or even filesystem-based would do much
better than learning server-specific APIs.

I don't want to expose more server-specific APIs in general.  On the contrary,
we're trying to move away from server-specific stuff into generic solutions like
JMX for managability, JAAS for authentication, Filters instead of Valves, and
more.  Accordingly I'm going to close this item as WONTFIX.  Since no other
committer has commented, I'm guessing there's lazy consensus here, but if not
they're free to reopen this issue and assign it to themselves.
