http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=42426

           Summary: Help system doesn't
           Product: JMeter
           Version: 2.2
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Main
        AssignedTo: jmeter-dev@jakarta.apache.org
        ReportedBy: beland@alum.mit.edu

When I choose "Help" from the "Help" menu, in the window that appears I see raw
HTML starting with "<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC " and then some HTML comments
containing the license, content stylesheet, etc. The text is not easily
cut-and-pasted, so I have not copied the whole thing here.

I was expecting to see rendered content explaining how to use the application.

This is on Fedora 6 with the jdk-1.6.0-fcs RPM.

It doesn't really matter where the problem is, as far as the documentation is
concerned. The question for the reader is what versions of Java the current
JMeter distribution will run on.

As far as I know it does work with Sun Java 1.4 on Linux.

As far as I am aware, the documentation now only recommends a fully compliant
Java 1.4 or later.

Please re-open with full details if this is not the case.

Works for me with jre 1.6.0_01-b06 from Sun.

It does not work in the default JVM gij 4.1.1 - are you sure that you are not
using that by mistake?

Check jmeter.log for errors.

That may be, but as far as I can tell that is a problem with the JVM, not
JMeter.

Between this bug and 42427, I would say JMeter doesn't work on the version of
Java 1.4.2 included with Fedora 6.

Re-opening, since documentation is still recommending java 1.3, 1.4, or 1.5.

------- Additional Comments From beland@alum.mit.edu 2007-05-17 11:05 -------
Ah, /usr/bin/java was actually pointing to a binary in the
java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp.110 RPM, which is required via dependency
chain from OpenOffice. I changed java and javac to point to binaries from the
jdk-1.6.0_01-fcs RPM, and now I see rendered HTML when engaging the help system.

Section 2.1.1 "Java Version" of
http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/usermanual/get-started.html says "Use the
latest version of Java 1.4 or 1.5 for best results". It should probably not be
recommending 1.4 if that's known not to work.
