> Our current workflow is as follows, we have a main workflow which splits off into 3 different sub workflows. Each of the sub workflows have a number of nested forks and joins.

From what we can see this happens on random occasions, all the jobs in the sub workflow which we are transitioning from have a status of "ok" but the workflow does not transition on to the next sub workflow. It is not clear whether the sub workflow is hanging on the final join or the transition to the parent workflow.
