Re: Web console in version 4.2

Posted by "M. David Minnigerode" <da...@minnigerode.org>.
That's the one (well the one I built anyway) that's throwing the spring
exceptions when i try running ./activemq .
I did get things going with the 4.1.1 tag and then did the same with trunk
by going directly into the activemq-web-demo and doing the mvn jetty:run

Which is plenty good for me right now.

thanks

Try the latest 4.2-SNAPSHOT which has the demos and web console inside
the broker

James,

Thanks for the response!

After the update I get through the build now. But still get an exception
when trying to start the resulting snapshot. My whole goal has been to try
out the REST demo. Clearly I've gotten a little obsessive about it... Will
try a 4.1 binary and just make my own little web app.

Re: Web console in version 4.2

Posted by James Strachan <ja...@gmail.com>.
Note that you've all hit a temporary glitch in trunk until Jetty does
another release; we'll be switching to the next release of Jetty as
soon as it goes out - from 6.1.2rc2 onwards (as we depend on that -
earlier versions don't work with trunk unless the web console is
disabled in the release'd activemq.xml).

Note that the binary distros of ActiveMQ are working fine, so you
don't *have* to build it yourself.

If you are building stuff yourself with maven and you're stuck like
this on any OSS project, its very easy to just grab the dependent
library and build it locally first.

The problem you've been hitting is that the jetty snapshot repo wasn't
in activemq's pom (my bad). I"ve fixed the pom.xml now so if you do an
'svn up' and try again it should build fine. I just zapped all my
jetty jars in ~/.m2/repository and re-ran the build and it worked for
me.

Re: Web console in version 4.2

Posted by "M. David Minnigerode" <da...@minnigerode.org>.
Sorry to say... I'm giving up.

Removed all the local maven repositories. Did a fresh co of trunk. mvn
install and got the failed to resolve artifact on jetty 6.1-SNAPSHOT.

bummer.

Re: Web console in version 4.2

Posted by "M. David Minnigerode" <da...@minnigerode.org>.
ahh... It was installing the products into ~/.maven so I was assuming that
was the repos maven was using... I missed/forgot about .m2.

Still... That shouldn't effect anything after a 'successful' build (after
setting the jetty version to 6.1.1). The product from that build died when
trying to do ./activemq with spring complaining about accessors. Even
altered the activemq.xml to work around some of those... but exceptions just
kept on coming.

I even tried checking out a pre jetty version change revision... it promptly
blew up. And going back to 4.0 src release... also blew up.

It's a tad baffling. I would expect to be able to build ANY tag or head of
a code line on a clean system with fresh installs of mvn/svn/jdk. Perhaps
it's just me.... I've had good experiences with AMQ binaries over the past
year so this is all rather distressing.

Anywhooo...

Actually, just realized that you specified w/o existing maven repo. Do you
think that deleting ~/.m2 and rebuilding might help?

Re: Web console in version 4.2

Posted by "M. David Minnigerode" <da...@minnigerode.org>.
Hum... Tried various versions of jetty. Event updated to previous revisions.
Can get the build to work. But get spring exceptions as in the other
subthread.

Has anyone done a clean checkout from trunk and done a build w/o an existing
maven repository?

thanks

Re: Web console in version 4.2

Posted by "M. David Minnigerode" <da...@minnigerode.org>.
No... someone needs to put the correct version of jetty into the maven
repository that's in the pom... or put the repository with the correct
version of jetty into the pom.

It sounds like someone switched the jetty version in the pom... but the rc1
version doesn't actually work... But I just showed up here so I'm pretty
much guessing at how things get done, obviously.

Hopefully it'll get sorted out soon.

Re: Web console in version 4.2

Posted by Daryl Richter <ng...@comcast.net>.
I have exactly the same problem here.

[Prax:~/Code/Java/activemq] ngzax% svn up
At revision 520846.

The message indicates that I could install Jetty manually, but certainly
that isn't what we should all be doing, right?

Still trying here... did a clean svn co of trunk. Then mvn install. Still

I did edit the pom and switch jetty to vers 6.1rc1 and the build worked...
But then got the following when starting ./activemq (as seen in the other

Do I need to use a maven repos other than the default given in the pom
perhaps? This was the first time i've built activemq and the first time
using maven2.

No, not at all. I just notice this issue too; someone had rolled back
a jetty version change which meant the trunk build was using the wrong
jetty versions. I've just fixed it and am in the process of uploading
a new build (which should finish in an hour or so - they take a while

OK - now I have problems with the binary package you uploaded. It appears to
be failing to initialize jetty.

First error in the stack is:

ERROR: java.lang.RuntimeException: Failed to execute start task. Reason:
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean
with name 'org.mortbay.jetty.xbean.JettyFactoryBean' defined in class path
resource [activemq.xml]: Cannot create inner bean '(inner bean)' while

org.springframework.beans.NotWritablePropertyException: Invalid property
'logUrlOnStart' of bean class [org.mortbay.jetty.webapp.WebAppContext]: Bean
property 'logUrlOnStart' is not writable or has an invalid setter method.
Does the parameter type of the setter match the return type of the getter?

Do I need to install the Jetty libraries seperately?

Fantastic, thanks for doing that.

I built it from the trunk, but had a problem with jetty libraries. I'm not a
Java dude, just a perl dude trying to get a messaging infrastructure up.

Thanks again.

Ah! It looks like our continuous integration build server has died, so
the nightly build doesn't actually include the web apps properly :)

If you build from source it should work just fine....
http://activemq.apache.org/building.html

I've just uploaded a new build manually which should work now

I had the same problem with the binary snapshot install. It looks like the
webapps folder is missing, maybe the target is missing in the build that is
generating the binary distros?

I'm running on OS X.

I downloaded the snapshot dated March 13th if I remember.
An no 0.0.0.0:8161 does not work and no errors are reported in the log.

Would I have a better success with an earlier snapshot ? Any recommendation
?

I wanted to use 4.2 just to avoid having to rebuild the console stuff like
in 4.1.
Looked a lot faster... Ah ! Ah ! Ah ! Looks like the turtle nailed the
rabbit again...
