[jira] Created: (DERBY-2188) Developer's Guide talks about a jdbc url property "locale" which is not supported by Derby.

Developer's Guide talks about a jdbc url property "locale" which is not supported by Derby.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: DERBY-2188
                 URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-2188
             Project: Derby
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: Documentation
    Affects Versions: 10.2.1.6
            Reporter: Mamta A. Satoor

Under "Localizing Derby" section, Developer's Guide talks about error messages and tools not relying on database's locale set by "locale=ll_CC". But Derby does not support any property called "locale".

The exact statement from documentation is as follows
"The locale of the error messages and of the tools is not determined by the database's localle set by the locale=ll_CC attribute when the database is created but instead by the default system locale. This means that it is possible to create a database with a non-default locale. In such a case, error messages would not be returned in the language of the database's locale but in the language of the default locale instead."

Dag H. Wanvik commented on DERBY-2188:
--------------------------------------

The "Locale=ll_CC" should be "territory=ll_CC", I think. This is what
is used in Derby to specifiy locale when the database is created
(connection attribute). I also find a similar (erroneous) quote in
"Getting started->Quick start guide->Connection URL":

One or more of the supported attributes of the
database connection URL, such as ;locale=ll_CC or ;create=true.
                                      ***********************************

This should be "territory=ll_CC", too. Maybe the name has been changed
at one time in the past from "locale" to "territory", and we are
seeing a palimpsest effect.

The missing doc for derby.ui.locale (used by the tools, not at
database creation) should also be fixed, I guess.

-------------------------------------------

There is a property called 'derby.ui.locale', but I can't find it in the documentation. It sounds like that's the property it's referring to.

The tools and utilities guide has an example under 'derby.ui.codeset' which uses a property called 'derby.ui.territory', but there's no such property either. I think that should be 'derby.ui.locale' too.

Laura, I just looked through the Derby 10.3 Developer's guide and the Localizing Derby section still talks about a JDBC url attribute that does not exist in Derby.

The locale of the error messages and of the tools is not determined by the database's localle set by the locale=ll_CC attribute when the database is created but instead by the default system locale

It should say territory=ll_CC rather than locale=ll_CC

Mamta A. Satoor commented on DERBY-2188:
----------------------------------------

Laura, I looked at the cdevin55108.html page and I have to admit that the contents of it look confusing to me. The html seems to be giving contradictory information. May be someone who knows more about tools, error messages and how they are related to locale can help us determine the right content but I thought I will bring to the list's attention.

The page says that "For example, Derby explicitly supports Spanish-language error messages. If a database's locale is set to one of the Spanish-language locales, Derby returns error messages in the Spanish language." So this seems to indicate that locale of the database will determine the language of the error messages. But the line below seems to say that locale of the database has nothing to do with language of the error messages. "The locale of the database is set by the territory=ll_CC attribute when the database is created. However, **the locale of the error messages and tools is not determined by the locale of the database**. The locale of the error messages and tools is determined by the default system locale. This means that it is possible to create a database with a non-default locale. In such a case, error messages are not returned in the language of the locale of the database but are returned in the language of the default locale instead."

Sorry, at this point, I do not know enough about how tools and error messages work in Derby to tell you what is the right content for cdevin55108.html. I am hoping someone who knows more about this can help us.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This issue is before 10.3. I am trying to determine if it still needs to be fixed.

The documentation for 10.3 was changed. The reference Mamta gave now reads "derbyLocale_II_CC.jar".

The entire text is:
"The locale-specific Derby jar file is named derbyLocale_ll_CC.jar, where ll is the two-letter code for language, and CC is the two-letter code for country. For example, the name of the jar file for error messages for the German locale is derbyLocale_de_DE.jar."

Knut mentions a property called 'derby.ui.locale'. Is this still a valid property?

Knut mentions the Tools and Utilities guide example under 'derby.ui.codeset' which uses a property called 'derby.ui.territory'.
The file is: rtoolsijpropref97949.dita
The text is an example:

The following command line specifies to run ij using the Japanese territory (territory=ja_JP) using Japanese Latin Kanji mixed
encoding (codeset=Cp939):

java -Dderby.ui.territory=ja_JP -Dderby.ui.codeset=Cp939
    -Dij.protocol=jdbc:derby:
    org.apache.derby.tools.ij

I'm not sure that I understand the -Dderby parts of this example...

Dag mentions the problem in the the Getting Started Guide.
The section is Database connection URL
The text still reads:
URLAttributes
One or more of the supported attributes of the database connection URL, such as ;locale=ll_CC or ;create=true.

Please help me understand which of the previous comments is still valid and what still needs to be implemented.

Mamta - I have asked on derby-dev about file cdevin55108.html. I suspect that Derby does not display the error messages in another language unless when IBM donated the code for Cloudscape, the error messages had been translated into other languges... any new messages since then will not appear in the locale language. However, there may be some kind of locale translator that is built in, which I am not aware off...

If we don't get a response in the next few days, I would like to commit the changes to the other files and open a separate issue for this one file. What do you think?

[jira] Commented: (DERBY-2188) Developer's Guide talks about a jdbc url property "locale" which is not supported by Derby.

Posted by "Knut Anders Hatlen (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.

Knut Anders Hatlen commented on DERBY-2188:
-------------------------------------------

> Knut mentions a property called 'derby.ui.locale'. Is this still a
> valid property?

Yes, it is still valid. It is used by the tools in derbyTools.jar to
decide which locale they should use for the messages they
produce. This property only applies to the messages from the tools,
not to the messages produced by the Derby engine (hence the 'ui' part
of the property name).

Take this ij session as an example:

  % java -jar derbyrun.jar ij
  ij version 10.4
  ij> connect 'jdbc:derby:no_such_database';
ERROR XJ004: Database 'no_such_database' not found.

If we set derby.ui.locale=de_DE, the output is changed to:

  $ java -Dderby.ui.locale=de_DE -jar derbyrun.jar ij
  IJ Version 10.4
  ij> connect 'jdbc:derby:no_such_database';
FEHLER XJ004: Database 'no_such_database' not found.

Here we see that the message "ij version 10.4" is translated to "IJ
Version 10.4", and "ERROR XJ004" is translated to "FEHLER
XJ004". These two messages are produced by ij itself. However, the
actual error message from the Derby engine (database not found) is not
affected by derby.ui.locale.

It also works for other tools than ij:

  $ java -Dderby.ui.locale=de_DE -jar derbyrun.jar dblook -d jdbc:derby:/tmp/testdb
  -- Zeitmarke: 2007-10-20 18:03:19.888
  -- Quellendatenbank: /tmp/testdb
  -- Verbindungs-URL: jdbc:derby:/tmp/testdb
  -- appendLogs: false

> Knut mentions the Tools and Utilities guide example under
> 'derby.ui.codeset' which uses a property called
> 'derby.ui.territory'.

I believe this is a typo in the example. It should have said
'derby.ui.locale'. To my knowledge, there is no property called
'derby.ui.territory'.

Laura Stewart commented on DERBY-2188:
--------------------------------------

The section is

Laura, I checked through the attached html pages and I have comment on rtoolsijpropref97949.html. When we give the example of setting locale for ij in the html page, we use -Dderby.ui.locale=ja_JP but the text above the example incorrectly says that the locale for ij is getting set using territory=ja_JP. I think the correct text would read as follows

The following command line specifies to run ij using the Japanese territory (derby.ui.locale=ja_JP) using Japanese Latin Kanji mixed encoding (codeset=Cp939):

Laura, I checked the changes in rtoolsijpropref97949.html and rgsquck30197.html and they definitely look good so your suggestion sounds good. We can go ahead and commit these 2 html files and open a separate issue for cdevin55108.html

--------------------------------------

The reference i mentioned in rgsquck30197.html is still wrong:

"One or more of the supported attributes of the
database connection URL, such as ;locale=ll_CC or ;create=true."

The ";locale=ll_CC" is wrong; it should be ";territory=ll_CC".

[jira] Commented: (DERBY-2188) Developer's Guide talks about a jdbc url property "locale" which is not supported by Derby.

About the following:

  java -Dderby.ui.territory=ja_JP -Dderby.ui.codeset=Cp939
      -Dij.protocol=jdbc:derby:
      org.apache.derby.tools.ij

I'm not sure that I understand the -Dderby parts of this example...

-D is a Java option that allows you to define (set) properties on the command line when you run a program. This command line (which should be all on one line) is setting values for the properties derby.ui.territory, derby.ui.codeset, and ij.protocol when it runs the org.apache.derby.tools.ij program (that is, when it starts the ij tool). Hope this helps.
