I have the same problem - OpenOffice version 3.3.0 OOO30m20 (Build:9567)
crashes any where from one to ten times before stabilizing and becomes usable. 
It happens with any OpenOffice program - scalc, swriter, sdraw, etc.

I have go through the recovery process each time, supposedly send a report, but
to date have had no correspondence from Oracle regarding this issue.

I have uninstalled and re-installed OpenOffice several times to no avail.

This is most unproductive, but does become useful when I have the time and
patience to go through recovering/restarting the program.
