   Manual backport of #66572 — auto-backport failed because main has unrelated OTel context-propagation code in `handle_requests` (`token` / `otel_context.attach` / `finally:` block) that's not on v3-2-test. Dropped that pre-existing-on-main code and applied only #66572's actual change: the catch-all `except Exception` block after `except ServerResponseError`. Original test added unchanged.
