Tomcat/JVM dumps core on unexpected signal 11 - intermittent behavior

Hello,
 
I am seeking help in diagnosing possible causes for an intermittent
crash we are experiencing with:

* Tomcat/4.1.24
* Apache/1.3.27
* mod_jk2/2.0.3
* Java 1.3.1_10
* SunOS 5.8

#### What Happens:
* JVM core dumps and reports unexpected signal 11.  (see below for the
log file message)
* Strange anomaly in the catalina.out file: some threads have very large
numbers. For example:

#### What I Have Found So Far:
* Googled for the error code.  Sun has tagged it as irreproducible.
* Many people have similar problems on other app server platforms.
Nothing conclusive on fixes or cause however.
* Tried jProfiler to see how the application behaves, but have not found
any tip-offs.

#### My Questions:
* Is it normal to have thread numbers in the thousands?  Usually there
are one or two out-lyers initially, but they slowly increase.
* Where do you think I should look for possible causes?
* Have you encountered anything similar?
