Kim - I don't know how the file could have gotten all those line
breaks, let me post the dita file that was added and you can add it to
your ditamap file... that might be the easiest way to fix this...

As near as I can tell (it's been awhile since I did any Derby documentation updates :-)
this is what needs to happen to update the documentation with this new built-in system procedure:
1. A new topic in the Reference Manual needs to be created
2. The name of the new procedure is: SYSCS_UTIL.SYSCS_UPDATE_STATISTICS
3. The syntax is: SYSCS_UTIL.SYSCS_UPDATE_STATISTICS(SCHEMANAME, TABLENAME, INDEXNAME)

I took a look at the patch, and it has some problems with markup in the refderby.ditamap file. There should be just one line that changes, to add the new topic. Instead there are lots and lots of changes, mostly arbitrary line break changes. We'll need a new patch. I can work on one, but Mamta will need to approve it, so there may not be time before Myrna needs to create the release candidate. I'll see what I can do.

One comment on the page for the example with null for index name. What null indicates is create all the missing stats and update all the existing stats. I think the following line (expecially "because there are no statistics for these indexes") might not clearly indiciate that.

1)Maybe something like following can be used to describe this procedure(please feel free to reword following)
Updates cardinality statistics (or creates them if they do not exist) for a table's index or for all the indexes on a table. Derby uses cardinality statistics to determine optimal query plan during the compilation of a query. If the statistics are missing, Derby may end up using a query plan which is not
the most efficient plan.
2)As for example, feel free to change the table names etc, but here are couple

3)The results of running the procedure can be seen by what query plan was picked for a given query. I am not sure we want to copy the whole query plan for the 2 scenarios(before and after updating the statistics). If we decide to include the query plan in the doc, we will have to make sure that we
maintain it between the releases in case the query plan format changes between the releases.

Not a show stopper for the release, but in beginning my buddy testing,
I noticed the examples should use CALL e.g.
CALL SYSCS_UTIL.SYSCS_UPDATE_STATISTICS('SAMP','EMPLOYEE','PAY_DESC');
CALL SYSCS_UTIL.SYSCS_UPDATE_STATISTICS('SAMP', 'EMPLOYEE', null);
Also in the Tuning Guide under Working with Cardinality Statistics -> When Cardinality Statistics Go Stale we should refer users to the SYSCS_UTIL.SYSCS_UPDATE_STATISTICS stored procedure to update their statistics and cross reference the reference guide.
