Getting UserID through JavaScript

Is there a way to get the UserId using JavaScript
instead of using jsp or velocity? Specifically, I
would like to use the Search portlet (index.html) -- I
am referring to the portlet (below) in
demo-portlet.xreg.
Thanks -- Ramesh
