Suran Jayathilaka commented on DERBY-3642:

The current tutorial uses linux file system paths in it's instructions and examples. Would it be acceptable for these to be Windows file system paths, since I am working on this issue on a machine running Windows? But using strictly Linux file paths would not pose a problem for me either, as I have a machine running Linux as well.

Also, I have updated the tutorial to say that it was created using JDK 1.5. Is this acceptable or should it remain as JDK 1.4.2?

Please express your opinions. Thanks.

Henrik Holum commented on DERBY-3642:
-------------------------------------

I looked at this issue today. I started with the tutorial at: http://db.apache.org/derby/papers/DerbyTut/index.html. I'm guessing that the updates you are refering to here will happen in the install software section (http://db.apache.org/derby/papers/DerbyTut/install_software.html).

I had no problems running through this tutorial with a new JDK (1.6) and the db-derby-10.4.1.3-bin release.

I did find that setEmbeddedCP.bat was moved from %DERBY_INSTALL%\frameworks\embedded\bin to %DERBY_INSTALL%\bin in the new release.

Kim Haase commented on DERBY-3642:
----------------------------------

Thanks very much for working on this issue, Suran. In answer to your questions --

I would suggest using both Windows and UNIX paths in the tutorial, as the Getting Started manual does (http://db.apache.org/derby/docs/dev/getstart/).

I think that saying the tutorial was created using JDK 5.0 is fine (along with saying that Derby requires JDK 1.4.2 or higher). JDK 6 would also be fine. (I don't know why the correct terms are "JDK 5.0" and "JDK 6", but those are the terms used on java.sun.com.)

Also, Henrik is correct that the frameworks directory has been removed from the latest release (after being deprecated for a couple of releases), so those paths need to be changed.

The patch looks good but when I build the site, I get these files updated:

build/site/papers/field-header-non-overflow.png
build/site/papers/page-format.png
build/site/papers/alloc-page.png
build/site/papers/container-format.png
build/site/papers/field-header-overflow.png

Should I just revert these before committing, like I do the skin files?

Thanks

Kathey

Yes i think those should be reverted. The same occurred when I built the site. I think it's some forrest quirk.
