I'm running X11 4.1 and xfstt with my Windows fonts copied over.
Attached are Mozilla and Konqueror screen shots

I don't think we will find a solution for this.
Italics font is a known kludge with at least linux fonts.
Though it looks good on my mozilla/linux.
Bill does it get any better if you change the size in your preferences?
(not that it solves the problem for other future users)

taken your latest work and added a few more changes. I like this the
most. I did remove italics, since some italics fonts are bad and used
bold but reduced the font. See the snapshot, looks neat to me.

here, where? I'm talking about NS4 on linux. it completely ignores:
span.big-mod {
font-family: helvetica, arial, verdana, sans-serif;
font-size: 1.5em;
...
}

beggin your pardon, no styles at all? works perfect here.

try:
span.big-mod {
font-family: helvetica, arial, verdana, sans-serif;
font-size: 1.5em;
color: #000000;

IMO it looks worse though.

this looks ok in NS4, it simply doesn't apply the style, so mod_perl
stays of the same style.
Though can we make "mod_perl" non-italic, so it'll look better?
p.s. I saw your followup Allan, just commenting on what I've tried.

Allan, please look at the snapshot of Per Einar's URL (attached). Any
idea how
to make the enlarged mod_perl work in NS4?

yes, as you said above, it's good for indentation, I'd make it even more
significant.

I didn't see it on your index.html (which I was viewing standalone) was
I supposed to drop it into the production tree?
The problem with the fading bar, is that 'pdf' link doesn't fit there.

ok, fair enough, but what about the indention level?
please try and outcomment the background and border colours
in the div.qoutation rule. the qoute should generally look a
little more compact than before.

Re: Italics on My linux machine => frontpage styles
Posted by Stas Bekman <st...@stason.org>.
I cannot tell since the italics style looks fine on my machine.
Regarding the enclosing box (which doesn't appear on NS4/linux), I don't
know if adding more boxes is a good idea. We have too many already.
I suggest to have a different approach to make it stand out: Make it
narrower than the page width. It's very hard to read wide text.
I also suggest again to drop, the phrase after 'Lincoln Stein', this
will make the name more prominent. At least there should be a line break
after it. I'm not sure what's the latest version that Per Einar had
presented earlier.
Ideally we should have made the whole site narrower so it's easier to
read. However code samples won't let us do that. Another reason is that
using absolute width is a bad idea too. I guess we could use em's for
that too, though I'm not sure if it's doable.
Oh, and you have dropped the fading out part of the line. That's good I
think. have you changed something else that I didn't notice? CVS diffs
are always easier to review, I understand that you've changed index.html
in place, so this wasn't possible.

please try enclosed index.html and style.css ... some other

it's about time you switch to mozilla :) it's good, though the mailer
could use some more work.

I think I mentioned this before. Look at the headers Allen, your mail
client is not setup correctly:
Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1; x-mac-type="0";
x-mac-creator="0";
name="index.tar.gz"
I don't think a tarball is text/html. Your mail program is telling my mail
program that it's inlined HTML.

seconded, the same problem here (I thought it was my client's problem,
so I didn't mentioned that). but some of them are handled more
gracefully by mozilla-mail. what email sw do you use, Allan?
Bill, I've re-attached Allan's tar.

i had a similar problem in ns4. but, when i specifically
defined the font-family in the style-sheet [div.qouation] it
looked better.
a wild shot, please try something like:
a) out-comment the css-line font-style: italic;
b) cut & paste this
<div class="quotation">
<i>"mod_perl is more than CGI scripting on steroids. It is
a whole new way to create dynamic content by utilizing the
full power of the Apache web server to create stateful
sessions, customized user authentication systems, smart
proxies and much more. Yet, magically, your old CGI scripts
will continue to work and work very fast indeed. With
mod_perl you give up nothing and gain so much!"</i>

</div>

We might be able to fix this by changing the fonts. Can you find a font
looking better in italics? (modify blockquote.quotation or something to fix
the font).
