Hangs during 'checkout' on Solaris 10?

Hi folks,

We've been using svn for a while now on Win, Mac and Linux, with no
troubles. We've just started using svn on Solaris 10 (i386), and are
seeing a problem...

When doing an initial checkout of our source tree, the checkout goes
like gangbusters for a while, and then stops. Once it has stopped, it
will sit there seemingly not doing anything for between 2 and 10
minutes. Eventually, it will continue. We usually have this happen a
half dozen times or so in the course of checking out our entire tree.
The resulting tree seems fine...even the files grabbed just
before/during/after the pauses seem OK.

If we run top, we see that during normal processing of "checkout", svn
uses about 75% of the CPU. During these pauses, svn is using 95-98% of
the CPU.

It might be that these pauses occur when downloading relatively large
files, but the length of the delay is in no way reasonable for the size
of the file...on the other three platforms, even these larger files take
just a few seconds to pull across our LAN. When not paused, the Solaris
version seems to zip along much like the Linux and Mac versions.

I'm running an Ultra 20 (A zippy little 64bit AMD machine with lots of
RAM and fast disks), svn 1.2.3 on both client and apache server, talking
via http over a 100MB LAN.

Can anyone provide a clue as to what is going on here? Alternately, any
suggestions for what I can do to provide more information as to what's
going on? If necessary, I guess I can try to get a debug build together
(I've just installed prebuilt binaries up until now), and I'll try to
figure out what svn thinks it's doing during those long pauses.

TIA

Steve Johnson

Can you try running truss on the program when it's in one of these
pauses? I'm curious what kind of system calls it's trying to do at
the time. Alternatively, you could try running it in a debugger, hit
control-c during one of the pauses, and get a backtrace, that might
give us some clue what's going on.

Does dmesg say anything useful? Like about a scsi or network timeout
error?
