Does Xerces support HTTPS???

I could not get Xerces and Xerces2 working via HTTPS. Namely I need to 
validate a xml document against a xml schema that is available via HTTPS. 
The parser reports a general error Failed to read schema document 
'https://...'. Is there any trick to get this working?
