discussion channels
Hello Mahout'ers
Is this currently the only forum for discussion, is there an IRC channel or
the like... where are the decisions being made...
There is nothing in JIRA, and no mailing list archive.
Thanks,
Yousef

Currently discussions are being made only on this mailing list.

There used to be another mailing list before we were accepted as subproject of
Lucene, the archives can still be found at
http://ml.grantingersoll.com/pipermail/ml-grantingersoll.com/
Yet the list is deprecated and thus inactive since the start of Mahout @
Apache.

Hi Yousef,
These should be:
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/lucene-mahout-dev/
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/lucene-mahout-user/
Getting a confluence ID and fixing now...

Actually the links on
http://cwiki.apache.org/MAHOUT/mailinglistarchives.html are throwing 404's
I agree with Chris's position that decisions should be made on the list for
posterity -- but that also means being able to browse back and see past
discussions.

Cool, it should be linked to from
http://lucene.apache.org/mahout/mailinglists.html
We do have email archives that are listed on the Wiki

Also, we are still in the process of getting the committers setup,
etc. so please bear with us as we get our feet under us, so to speak.
And there is mahout-user@lucene.a.o, but there really isn't going to
be much on that until we have something for people to try out.
It does bring up a good point, and one thing I, personally, strongly
believe in terms of creating community, which is we should strive to
have discussions and decisions take place on the list: http://people.apache.org/~hossman/#private_q
I personally don't have the time for an IRC channel and don't think I
would encourage one either. We do have email archives that are listed
on the Wiki. Decisions are made in the standard ASF way, I guess. If
it is a major decision, committers should ask for votes (or at least
feedback), but for the most part the committers are responsible for
deciding what is good to put on based on their understanding of the
code, etc. Contributors can supply patches and lobby for inclusion as
well as encourage discussion.
Of course, the best way to start a discussion is to put up a patch
implementing X and ask for others to try it out. :-)
Cheers,
Grant
