[VOTE] Release of Apache XAP 0.3.0

Incubator,

Apache XAP has released version 0.3.0, this is the inaugural release of
the project. With the help of Robert, Cliff and the whole Xapian
community we have worked through development, testing, licensing and
packaging of the XAP release. I would like to thank everyone for their
tremendous help.

The release files can be found at:
http://people.apache.org/~bbuffone/xap-release/

Please cast your votes:

[ ] +1 Release is approved
[ ] -1 Veto the release (provide specific comments)

Thank you,
Bob (Buffone)

The directory is missing the gpg asc signatures for the zip/tar.gz artifacts.
Those are required.

I have looked into this file and it is currently not being used anywhere
in the code base. It seems it was added by dojo as a utility to help
achieve rounded corners (everyone knows how important rounded corners
are when developing a web 2.0 application). I will remove this file
from the repository as well as the release archives.

I will send out an email when this is complete and the file has been
uploaded.

What version of dojo are you using? 0.4 version of Rounded.js
contains the following:

/*
Copyright (c) 2004-2006, The Dojo Foundation
	All Rights Reserved.

Licensed under the Academic Free License version 2.1 or above OR
the

and:

/*
*	The following script is derived (with permission) from
curvyCorners,
*	written by Cameron Cooke (CLA on file) and was adapted to Dojo
by
Brian
*	Lucas (CLA on file)

Hmm. Well, I see that there's no mention of a CLA from Tim Hutchison
(who's listed as an author in your version...)

You will need to find this out. If the file is under LGPL, it can't sit in the
ASF repository at all, nor has a non-optional dependency in your code on that
piece.

apache tries to run with minimal policy. instead we rely on democracy
(in the greek sense). this isn't policy but the opinion of (some of)
the electorate

the consensus now is that author tags have proved to be a bad idea and
so should be discouraged. (not that it stops those who are most
determined to discover who created a class in order to email them
personally)

IHMO this isn't a matter that's serious enough to -1 a release.
hopefully, is anyone else thinks that this is the case they'll jump
in.

It is not good practice. In log4j, almost all @author tags belong to
committers no longer active in the project so they no longer function
as a "no trespassing" sign. Sorry to be a bad example.

Do the author tags need to be removed for release? Is it a general
Apache policy to not include author tags or is it project specific? (I
quickly checked out log4j and I see lots of author tags there...)

Also our NOTICE is copied from Roller, so if it is indeed wrong someone
may want to inform them as well.

I see new checkins of the NOTICE file so I assume a new vote will be
happening shortly.

You are correct, -1 to the NOTICE file containing this information.
for the reasons above... we require NOTICE to be propogated so it must
be limited to factual legal terms of the distribution. Plus...

In general, @author tags and attributions are poison to ASF-style
collaboration, they are all about carving out niches in the code.
The ASF-style development is about tearing down niches and promoting
collaboration across an entire code base. Collaboration and ownership
are generally mutually exclusive.

These are all good alternative suggestions...

Robert,

I have fixed the problems with the release

1.) removed the LGPL code
2.) removed committers from the NOTICE
3.) add the *.asc file for the release

Do I call for another vote saying these issues are fixed or just
response to the previous vote saying the issues are fixed?

Bob

just one minor issue (missing copy of LGPL) so think i'm +1 providing
that it's fixed in trunk

possible issues
-------------------

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/xap/trunk/codebase/src/dojo/sr
c/widget/Rounded.js
is difficult. perhaps DOJO has a special license but it's probably
best to assume that the license is LGPL and needs to be added to the
LICENSE file.

maybe martin could shed some more light on this...
