So, it looks like the issue was a version mismatch between the jar I was specifying with `spark.yarn.jar` and the version being used on the YARN cluster.

I think communication confusion between the nodemanagers or the external shuffle service was to blame.

So - perhaps the issue is that different versions should crash rather than misbehave?
