Firewalls

Since people seem to be interested in the subject, here's a brief explanation
of my firewall.

One of our networks is linked to the Internet via a leased line. This network
is the only one with routing enabled on the Internet. We have several others,
including the one I'm on (at home - I work mostly from a back room stuffed
with computers). None of them have advertised routes. The router running the
leased line has a pretty rigorous packet filtering policy. The Internet
network is connected to the rest of our networks by a non-gateway dual-homed
host. This shares a private net using a discard number with two other gateway
hosts, which connect the rest of our nets with more or less full routing (there
are some filters there, too). I connect to one of those hosts via ISDN. So,
from where I sit, there is no route to the Internet, and about 3 systems have
to go seriously wrong, as well as my ISP to start spontaneously routing my nets
before there will be a route.

So, I need SOCKS!

Cheers,

Ben.
