Alpha 5

Are there any plans to roll this soon?

The "land a man on the moon" thread had a lot of support so maybe we should
keep the momentum going?

We are using GNATS for right now. When Brian finishes with newlocus, I
believe we will be talking again about bugzilla or the tigris system.

Sorry about the recent commits, especially if this holds up the alpha. I
just wanted to fix a few bugs today. :-)

I think someone volunteered, so shall we?

I know it's a bit of effort but we've had a few changes to configuration
and a wider airing might be in all of our best interests!

Nope. Release early, release often. I'll work on a release after the DAV is
up and running. If a5 happens to come out before then, well fine.

We are not in the "release often" mode right now. We should never hold up
for specific changes. Just release it. Those changes will appear in the next
release. Simple as that.

Slowing down a release cycle is only helpful for *final* releases. People
don't want to upgrade their 1.3.x servers every two weeks. But alphas?
Almost by definition, these are not production servers, but test/play/dev
servers. If thsoe people feel like picking up a new version, they will. No
harm in tossing another one out there. In fact, it can do a lot of good.

I'm going to work on mod_dav integration while Ryan reviews my response to
his challenege problem. Once I get the DAV stuff working, then I'll do it.
If somebody beats me to it, then great. I expect to get DAV limping very
late today, or tomorrow.

Anybody out there who wants to RM *today* ?

That makes sense. Let me put it this way then. I am not against an alpha
at all. The more alpha's we have the better off we are. I would REALLY
prefer to not make this alpha. I have a lot on my plate right now
(Apache, work, and non-work stuff) and an alpha really requires a lot of
time.

I would make one request to whoever does do the alpha. The instructions
for rolling releases says to wait 24 hrs between putting it on the site
and making the announcement. The group decided to not follow that
instruction anymore. We always just get scooped, because /. and freshmeat
end up making our announcement for us. :-) At least that is my
understanding.

Hmmm, I wondered about that. I'd rather actually roll an alpha now BEFORE
we have the filtering patch in place, then roll again once it's there. I
realise it's more work (and if I were in a place where I could do the
rolling I would volunteer but I'm not so I won't) but there have been a lot
of changes and having another alpha doesn't hurt anything but does provide
another cue for testing that we need.

As we keep saying, it is ONLY an alpha!

Not yet. I am not in favor of rolling this until the filtering thread is
finished. Basically, I think if we can finish the filtering thread in the
next day or two (VERY LIKELY), we can have a patch in within a week (or a
decision to not include a patch), and then we roll the next alpha.

Basically, I would like one alpha with filtering if we are going to
include it.

Two or three weeks later we roll a beta :-)
