Also, beware of multiple server instances. See http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/running-multiple-instances-of-geronimo.html. To start a server instance, "set the org.apache.geronimo.server.name system property to the instance name before you start the server." It seems that GEP probably does not support that currently... This presents another wrinkle in reading a server configuration.

Ted, Thanks for your comments! Currently I am not looking at supporting remote servers and multiple server instances into this. Since both of these are not yet supported in GEP. We do have a JIRA GERONIMODEVTOOLS-216 open for remote server support and none for multiple server instances(don't know how feasible it is adding another server from same installation directory). However I would like to work on the current model of GEP that is one server from one installation directory without remote support. If this seems to be viable I will research more on it and provide options for fixing it.

As stated, I do not think this is a good idea. If you are going to read configuration info from the server, I'd get all of it, not part of it. So, you should get rid of the manual GEP step of specifying the two ports. We have always had this manual step, and reading the server config would be a departure. I presume you'd just take server code. How much would be involved, and what additional jars would be required for parsing and calculating the server configuration? We must also consider the remote server case. I don't think reading a remote server configuration will work out. Do you want to treat the remote server config case differently? Is the advantage gained from proposed change worth the effort and change in approach? Does anyone recall the rationale for the current manual configuration approach in GEP? Are there any issues being missed in changing from that approach?

Adding the content to JIRA:

Hi!!

I make a change in the portOffset value in the config-substitutions.properties. Lets suppose portOffset=1. Then I use Eclipse to start the server. Server fails to start, but when I start the server from <Geronimo_home>/bin/startup.bat it starts fine.
These are my observations for the same

1)While we configure Eclipse to add a new server. It takes the values for web connector and RMI naming as 8080 and 1099. Now when I change the Web Connector=8080+portOffset=8081 and RMI naming port=1099+portOffset=1100 in eclipse. I use eclipse to start the server. Server starts fine. Moreover all the modules also start with Offset of 1 from the default value. Donot know how it happens?

2)How does eclipse pick which modules to start in what port. I guess it takes the config.xml . But in AG 2.0 there are no explicit values mentioned in config.xml. So where does it pick the values from. I am not sure whether it refers to config-substitutions.properties. If it refers to config-substitutions.properties then why the server does not start in the first case.

I am confused about this. Is this a bug?

Thanks
Ashish

I don't fully follow all that you say. With the plugin, when you
define a server, you may specify the HTTP and RMI Naming ports. The
defaults are 8080 and 1099, respectively. You may also edit and
change these values later. These values are plain numbers. There is
no notion of portOffset. Nor does the plugin look at config.xml.

Your second post looks like a bug. It seems the plugin code that
polls the server state has lost contact with the server. It times
out, and changes the server to the stopped state. You may also
configure Server Startup parameters/constraints: ping delay, ping
interval and maximum pings. Be sure that (ping interval) * (maximum
pings) / 1000 is longer than your server startup time. From your
note, it sounds like that is not the problem, but rather that the
plugin has lost contact with the server.

HTH,
Ted Kirby

Hi Ashish, I agree with Ted, this is most certainly a bug. I have opened a JIRA
to address this problem. Thanks very much for bringing this to our attention.

[jira] Commented: (GERONIMODEVTOOLS-235) Plugin cannot synchronize with the server when non-zero portOffset value in the config-substitutions.properties file

Ted Kirby commented on GERONIMODEVTOOLS-235:
--------------------------------------------

See GERONIMODEVTOOLS-353 for remote server support. While there may be instances where reading server config information may not work (as stated above), it seems that it should work in the most predominate case of local server. It also seems that GeronimoServerDelegate.setDefaults is where the 1099 and 8080 settings come from initially when defining a server, and they are hard-coded values. So it seems that anything we can do to better set these values is a good thing. We might put a note on the screen if we find settings that suggest the values should be other than these defaults.

Ashish Jain commented on GERONIMODEVTOOLS-235:
----------------------------------------------

We can resolve this issue by reading through the config-substitution.properties to figure out the PortOffset value later increase the Web Connector and RMI-naming port with the same value. This may resolve the synchronization issue. Please provide your valuable comments on this. If this is feasible I will go ahead and create a patch for this.
