[DISCUSS] Switching wiki to Confluence

Hi folks,

We're moving the docs to the source, which is great!

However, we still have some stuff that we wanna keep on the wiki for now:

 * Weekly news (not started yet)
 * Merge procedure
 * Release procedure
 * Release preparation
 * Test procedure
 * Committer election process
 * PMC election process
 * Community guide
 * Roadmap process
 * Board reports
 * Board report guide
 * Code of conduct
 * PMC charter
 * By-laws
 * Marketing guide
 * CouchDB vision stuff

Um. Probably more stuff. That's just stuff I am interested in working on.
Anyway, this is all project-level stuff. Doesn't belong on the homepage,
doesn't belong in the manual.

I've been editing the wiki more and more recently, and I gotta tell you:
it's a bag of shit. I mean really, I pressed "submit" on a change about 20
seconds before sending this email, and I'm still writing this email, and
the page is still loading.

I dunno if any of you have had any experience with the wiki recently, but
it's been this slow for months. And I am not confident it's gonna get any
better.

For that reason, I keep thinking about moving to Confluence. I'm not sure
how much work is involved in that. Perhaps people wanna help out?

Might be a nice opportunity to clear out the stuff that is in Moin, that we
don't want there any more, because it's in the docs. (i.e. We just wouldn't
move it over.)

If you don't regularly edit the wiki, I'm hoping you wont mind the proposed
move. As I say, as someone who is using it fairly regularly, it is causing
me a lot of problems.

(Though, I really don't need to be adding work to my plate. Perhaps someone
else would be interested in moving the content over? Eugh.)

Thanks,

I'm there and would be glad to help (: I'll post list of "moved" wiki
articles to docs a bit later on this week. Is it ok?

Ooh, also, Alexander. It would be cool if you'd be available too. As I
expect, for many of the pages, we can just not move over. But it would be
good to have you involved!

Joan, are you still up for doing a few sprints? We could tag team the work

This discussion in May holds most of my opinions.

Confluence is free-as-in-beer to OSS projects and Apache overall.

If we're not moving off of JIRA for issue tracking, we should move to
Confluence for wiki stuff.

"New editors must email asking for permission."

A timely reminder. Does Confluence have better anti-spam protection?
That alone is a compelling reason to switch.

FWIW I avoid the wiki because of the pain and slowness.

Speed is a feature, and the wiki is slow. It is slow to execute, but also
it is slow to sign in (every time I sign in, it begins with a "forgot
password" step). And it is slow to join. New editors must email asking for
permission.

Often, when I talk though an idea on dev@, the next step is to write up a
simple plan. I wish I could do that on the wiki but I hadn't even
considered it.

"None of that presupposes a tool migration."

Agreed (of course), but it doesn't preclude it either.

I'd use the switch as a chance to clean up the wiki, importing only
what's good and true.

This was discussed previously[1] in May. I assume that moinmoin
slowness atm is another round of spam attacks, this is reported on a
couple of other projects I use too.

Nota Bene, IMHO the most important part is to review each/every page
and migrate content to .rst docs, or clean/dump as required. None of
that presupposes a tool migration.

I've used confluence in the past and quite liked it. Integration with jira would be handy, too, though I don't know the details of it.

Didn't this come up a while ago? I have a vague recollection of a small group of folks volunteering to migrate things over...

I am still interested in moving to Confluence, though perhaps it's less

That will be step one, I expect. Well, more like step 2. We need to request
the new wiki first.

I will let this thread simmer for a few more days before taking lazy
consensus on the subject. So far we've had a few +1s and no objects, and
assuming that remains the case, we'll be free to proceed.

Re: [DISCUSS] Switching wiki to Confluence

I'm volunteering as well.

As far as I understood it is about converting the "good" parts of the
wiki to RST, right?

Okay, follow up:

1) Confluence has a CAPTCHA system, so we can drop the "you have to be
manually added to a list of approved contributors" rule. (If we get
spam,
despite having a CAPTCHA, we can add the same sort of rule. But at
least we
get to try it and see.)

2) Still looking at conversions tools. At this point, I think I'm
happy to
volunteer to do it by hand. It's gonna be hard to automate this stuff
anyway. Our wiki is quite small, and we should be loosing about 60% of
it
anyway, with Alexander's work on the docs.

I tested CloudStack's Confluence wiki[1], and it seems perfectly fine to me.

I am posting a quick note to Infra to ask them if MoinMoin is likely to
fixed any time soon. It's been like this for ages.

Re: [DISCUSS] Switching wiki to Confluence

We have a new wiki:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COUCHDB/CouchDB+Home

I will add some notices to our old wiki asking people to move over.
And I will begin the manual process of moving things over myself.

A little later, but nevertheless +1, if things will be greener on the

I would also prefer that the wiki run on free software; however if we had a
decent import/export feature I would be satisfied.

Like said Dave this has been discussed in may. I have no strong opinion on
that. Apart the speed which is quite relative to the location where you
live maybe we should also take in consideration the fact that moinmoin is
quite more open than confluence is ie I don't need to ask a license (eve
free) to use it. Also not sure about the syntax as well.

Since we are using Jira also written by Atlassian that may not a problem
though.

My 2 cents.
