Capturing System.err or System.out?

My james does not start. There is a lot of dependencies in my custom mailets and matchers. I am trying to figure out where is the problem, but the stack trace from Spring is not helpful. How can I capture stderr and stdout streams to find out errors during start-up? Any other suggestions? I am getting:

NYCV12EMAIL02:/opt/mailer/bin # ./run.sh
/usr/bin/java
Exception in thread "main" org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanDefinitionStoreException: Unexpected exception parsing XML document from class path resource [context/james-server-context.xml]; nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException...

Spring is trying to instantiate object of some class and I would like to find out what is the class. Nowhere in the stack trace there is any indication. I would really appreciate any suggestions on how to find out what causes the errors...
Thanks,
-Paul

Hi Paul,

I've opened https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMESAPP-7 to track
this out.

Thx, Eric

RE: Capturing System.err or System.out?

Hi Eric,

Yes, that was it! Switched to 1.6 and everything works. Would be nice to fix it so that 1.7 can be used. I assume that the issue is with the class loader.

Thanks!

Hi Paul,

I've experienced that weird exception and there is nothing to do to understand it... Finally, I found it was related to jdk7 incompatibilities (well, sometimes it was working, sometimes not).

You have to run on jdk 6 to make it work. If you run in eclipse, you also have to ensure you run with jdk6 (jdk7 with jdk6-profile will give the same issue).

That's something we have to monitor and see if the next spring and/or jdk release solve this.

Thx,
Eric

Re: Capturing System.err or System.out?

Posted by Eric Charles <er...@apache.org>.
Hi Paul,

I've experienced that weird exception and there is nothing to do to
understand it... Finally, I found it was related to jdk7
incompatibilities (well, sometimes it was working, sometimes not).

You have to run on jdk 6 to make it work. If you run in eclipse, you
also have to ensure you run with jdk6 (jdk7 with jdk6-profile will give
the same issue).

That's something we have to monitor and see if the next spring and/or
jdk release solve this.

Thx,
Eric

RE: Capturing System.err or System.out?

Posted by Pa...@thomsonreuters.com.
Thanks, Ioan.
Yeah, I am getting the same stuff that I see on the console. Looks like it never gets to my classes which are printing messages. The exception is thrown by Spring when it instantiates some beans. Below is the full stack.

NYCV12EMAIL02:/opt/mailer/bin # ./run.sh
/usr/bin/java
Exception in thread "main" org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanDefinitionStoreException: Unexpected exception parsing XML document from class path resource [context/james-server-context.xml]; nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException

./run.sh > std_out_capture.txt
./run.sh 2> std_err_capture.txt
