Upgrading from SA 3.1.1 to the latest version

Hi folks,

I am thinking of upgrading SA to the latest version due to the requirements
for installing Fuzzyocr as posted at
http://fuzzyocr.own-hero.net/wiki/Installation-3.5.x

I have searched this forum for upgrade posting but still there are issues
that are not clear ( I have also read the installation note at 
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/spamassassin/branches/3.1/UPGRADE).

What is the best option?

1.Remove the current installation? if yes on which directories? 
2. Overwite the current version with the new one? Can the functionality of
SA be degradated since i am not starting from a clean install just upgrade?
3. Running sa-update?
