Following Karsten's lead, here is a modification to the patch from Daniel,
instead of comparing $cc several times,

    $crosscountries +=1 if (($lcc ne '') and ($lcc ne $cc) and ($cc !~
/XX|\*\*/));
    $countriesvisited{$cc}++ if $cc !~ /XX|\*\*/;
    $lcc = $cc if $cc !~ /XX|\*\*/;

why not just doit once?

    if ($cc !~ /XX|\*\*/) {
      $crosscountries += 1 if (($lcc ne '') and ($lcc ne $cc));
      $countriesvisited{$cc}++;
      $lcc = $cc;
    }
