[ANNOUNCE] Tomcat 4.0 Milestone 4
We're pleased to announce the availabililty of milestone 4 of the Tomcat
4.0 servlet container and JSP engine. Compared to milestone 3, this
release reflects the following changes:
* Implementation of all the changes between "public draft" and "proposed
final draft"
of the Servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2 specifications.
* Implementation of all remaining 2.3 / 1.2 features -- Tomcat 4.0 is
now a
feature complete implementation of the new specs!
* Many bug fixes (see RELEASE-NOTES-4.0-M4.txt in the top level
directory).
Binary distributions of the new release are available from:
http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat-4.0/release/v4.0-m4
and source releases can be downloaded from:
http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat-4.0/release/v4.0-m4/src
If you are planning on building Tomcat 4.0-m4 from source, you will want
to pick up the corresponding distribution of the servlet API classes,
found in the same directory. Users of the binary distribution need not
do this -- a servlet.jar file containing the most current version of the
servlet API classes is included in the "bin" directory of the binary
release.
Come and get it!

I must not be commenting correctly; if I comment this out I get
"Page contains no data" on http://memes.sea.boeing.com:8080
(index.html).

Well, yes! It does! Of course JSP doesn't. (web.xml is unchanged)

Well, I -can- run two tomcats for a while; this is only a demo system,
after all.
(And actually I prefer XSP to JSP anyway ;))
Thanks!

Groan ... BOY do I hate class loaders :-)
Could you try me an experiment?
* Comment out the <servlet> declaration
for the JSP servlet in
$CATALINA_HOME/conf/web.xml
* Temporarily remove "crimson.jar" and "jaxp.jar"
from $CATALINA_HOME/lib
* Restart and see if Cocoon works
The right long term answer is that Xerces becomes JAXP-1.1 compatible, so that system
administrators can simply use that instead of Crimson if they want to. In the mean time,
Jasper (the JSP servlet) has a requirement for Crimson because it is the only JAXP-1.1
compatible parser available (we needed the portable SAX2 support).
If you need Cocoon *and* JSP, I don't have a good answer for you right at the moment ...

Got it! Ooops! I lost cocoon!
2872427 Oct 31 09:38 ../archive/jakarta-tomcat-4.0-20001031.tar.gz
runs cocoon,
2870683 Nov 2 08:32 ../archive/jakarta-tomcat-4.0-m4.tar.gz
does not.

My installation procedure was to unzip (gzip) 4.0-m4, rename the
directory
to jakarta-tomcat, 'cp -r' [old]/webapps/cocoon to
jakarta-tomcat/webapps
cd to jakarta-tomcat and type bin/startup.sh. JSP and servlets
otherwise
look fine.

As the release notes point out, there are still no web connectors so the
answer is "yes". Web connectors are being actively worked on ... they just
don't work well enough yet to start testing (you can ask Pier, who wrote the
original mod_jserv code and is working on this, how much he liked having to
write C code again after years of Java's freedom from pointer-related problems
:-).

The SecurityManager stuff can start getting tested even in standalone mode (hint
hint :-). I'm sure there's something I don't understand yet about configuring the
classloader to set up the right protection domains, and I could sure use some help.

Originally, it was going to be mod_jk. For a bunch of reasons that Pier is going to
be better equipped to articulate when he posts the code, mod_jk turns out not to be
the optimum solution. What we're going to end up with (to be called mod_warp) is a
connector that:
- Uses a persistent, binary, two-way protocol.
- Is aware of *all* the settings in web.xml, so we don't
have to play all the stupid configuration games that
mod_jserv and mod_jk both require.
- Integrates new stuff like servlet filters transparently,
even when Apache ultimately serves the static files
(required by the 2.3 spec)
- Runs in-process or out-of-process for Apache (in-process
on 2.0 only) initially, then later extended to IIS/Netscape.
To do this, the connector is going to provide custom implementations of the Engine
interface (Apache incorporates the virtual host stuff already, so there won't be a
need for a Host interface when installed this way) plus custom implementations of
the HttpRequest and HttpResponse interfaces (that do things like "go back to the
server and get header xyz" only if it is asked for).
But, it's taken Pier somewhat longer than he originally anticipated to get to code
that runs. I'm going to (continue to) encourage him to post what he's got so that
others can pitch in and help.

Greetings,
I know Apache has a LockFile directive that needs to be
used under NFS. Is there anything similar for Tomcat that
one should be aware of?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I have been eagerly awaiting a connector for Apache. I really like the
design of the virtual host support in Tomcat 4.0, but am awaiting a
connector so that I can do extensive virtual host and Java
SecurityManager testing.
Is this the Tomcat 4.0 connector for mod_jk as listed in todo.html?
The tomcat side of the connector is causing the standard mod_jk in
Apache to core dump?

To quote Pier (the person who wrote the original mod_jserv connector and is
writing the one for Tomcat 4.0), the current code coredumps about two out of
every three requests. That wouldn't be a useful thing to publish.
As soon as there is a connector worth testing, it will be published (and a new
milestone containing it created). But it needs to work first :-).

Yes, they are coming along. No, they are not yet in the CVS source, although
Pier promises they will be as soon as he finishes the protocol documentation (so
that we're not stuck with another undocumented protocol).

How are the Apache Connectors for Tomcat 4.0 coming along ? Is there
some kind of source already available via CVS somewhere ?

It does not have the connector yet -- that's the primary reason why it is
still a "milestone" release rather than a "beta". You can count on the
fact that the announcement email for the first milestone that has a web
connector in it will trumpet that fact pretty loudly :-).

or does it still only work in standalone mode?
