[users@httpd] Apache MultiViews: /foo returns /foo/, not foo.html
Hi,
I have some problem with MultiViews if I have directory and files with
similar names.
I have the following directory structure:
/path/to/foo/bar.html
/path/to/foo.html
1. When I point my browser to 'http://host/path/to/foo' (please notice,
it is WITHOUT a trailing slash), I expect to get /path/to/foo.html.
2. And when I point my browser to 'http://host/path/to/foo/bar' , I
expect to get /path/to/foo/bar.html.
The second thing works correctly. But in the first situation, I've got
(my browser is REDIRECTED to) 'http://host/path/to/foo/' (notice the
trailing slash) which is wrong for me, because I'm redirected to foo
directory listing instead of foo.html.
I've read about this problem in a newsgroup, called
comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix. The message can be found here:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=multiviews&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&client=googlet&selm=86snp3%24nve%241%40salmon.maths.tcd.ie&rnum=1
It is from 2000... Frances Daly posted that message and described the
problem clearly and suggested a patch. Nothing happened since then.
I posted my problem to forums.devshed.com, but nobody could help me. Is
there any solution to solve my problem? I'm interested in any solution.
Or is it an Apache-dev problem, so have I post my problem to developer list?
thanks in advance,
Zsolt

Yes, this does appear to be a bug/misfeature. You might want to report it
to the new bug database, since the one referenced in that newsgroup
posting is now retired.
I'm not sure, however, how likely the developers will be to want to fix
this. In probably 99% of cases, when people request /foo and the
directory /foo/ exists, they want to get /foo/. To fix this, Apache would
have to do extra work on all such requests in order to see if Multiviews
should come into play. But on the other hand, if people want a directory,
they should be requesting it with the trailing slash in the first place.
Joshua.
