Website build systems

Hello,

I was wondering what other 'build' systems are available for Apache
websites. The SVN based one we are using via the web interface seems
to result in a large amount of commits. A system where we can build
locally and view changes easily before committing would be good.

Or...are we not using it the correct way? Am I just complaining
because my SVN skills have deteriorated to the point where mention of
the acronym makes me shudder?
