Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Key: JAMES-319
Summary: X-Text-Classification header (from POPFile) disappearing
Type: Bug
Status: Unassigned
Priority: Major
Project: James
Components:
FetchMail
Versions:
2.2.0
Assignee:
Reporter: Patrick Vanhuyse
Created: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 6:07 AM
Updated: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 6:07 AM
Description:
I use POPFile (popfile.sourceforge.net) to classify my incoming mail (spam and others).
I have configured it to add a property "X-Text-Classification=classification" in the header of each mail received.
It works fine without James.
With James, this property disappears from the header.

Apologies for not going via Jira but I'm getting an error 502 getting to
it at present. My first thought (not knowing what mail client you are
using) is to suggest playing with the pop3_toptoo parameter which in the
current version can be found in the advanced screen.
Of course if your client does not use TOP to return the headers, then
you will have to find another solution.

Body:
As far as I can see, the code doesn't mess with the headers.
In confirmation, I read the preceding comment from the mailing list having fetched it using fetchmail. The following X-Headers are included in this mail...
X-ASF-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.0 required=10.0
tests=NO_REAL_NAME
X-Spam-Check-By: apache.org
X-Virus-Checked: Checked
...which suggests that fetchmail propogates X-Headers correctly.
Perhaps something downstream of fetchmail is causing the problem?

Below is the source of the message received from James through POPFile and the source of a similar message received throught POPFile only.
They appear in POPFile as SPAM.
With James, the X-Test-Classification header doesn't appear anywhere.

It would be interesting to try the matching on the 'lost' header as early as possible in James' mailet chain, by inserting...
<mailet match="HasHeader=X-Text-Classification" class="NotifyPostmaster"/>
This will tell us if the header is part of the message injected into James by fetchmail.

It doesn't work when Mail client calls James calls POPFile calls Mail server.
It works when Mail Client calls POPFile calls James calls Mail Server.

I've left the issue open for now pending more supporting evidence that this is a fetchmail issue or an issue requiring resolution elsewhere.

Interesting! Can you post the message source of the message received from James so I can take a look?
Alternatively, if you can view the message source - how depends on your email client - is the missing header anywhere to be seen? If so, where relative to the initial set of headers and the first blank line prior to the message body?
