[Math] order-statistics tree (augmented red-black)
I would like an order - statistics tree,
Which behaves with the same running times
as a standard red-black binary search
tree.
The Java TreeSet and TreeMap are both
red-black trees based on the algorithm from
CLRS (Corman Leiserson Rivest Stein),
however in looking at the code, it
would not be easy to extend these creatures
to do what I want (Unless I am missing Something).
Most of their underlying left and right rotate methods
are private, and could not be extended or augmented with data (such as order stats) easily.
However Chapter 14 of [ CLRS ]
has the algorithm to do this.
1. Are there any plans to do something like
this in either the Math, or Collections
sections of Commons?
2. If so how could we get this prioritized, etc.
Bryce

I don't think so.
I'm not quite familar with the term "statistics tree". If
it's a modification to rbtrees which optimizes for a
predetermined ad-hoc statistic for modification or read
access it should probably go into the collections module.
If the statistic is calculated on the fly from the access,
then, well, it should probably also go into the collections
module.
Could you explain a bit more?

Not sure if it'll help you, but you can ask ezmlm to send you previous
messages again:
To get messages 123 through 145 (a maximum of 100 per request),
mail:
<co...@jakarta.apache.org>
To get an index with subject and author for messages 123-456 , mail:
<co...@jakarta.apache.org>
Send a message to commons-dev-help@jakarta.apache.org for a full list
of commands (like it says at the bottom of each message :-)).

Danny Angus,
I deleted your message accidentally and thus don't have your email address
(Jakarta's mail archive completely removes them from the messages rather than
simply obscuring them), otherwise I might have asked this question privately.
I asked the same question on the BSF list last weekend but have not gotten any
reply (though to be fair, that list is pretty inactive).
Is it possible to run a script via BSF whose lifetime is comparable to that of
the parent Java application? My wish is to develop a substantial part of a
Java application in a non-Java scripting language and have it participate as
almost a first-class citizen within its parent. My thought was perhaps to
spawn a thread to run the BSF script execution and communicate with the
(scripting-language-created) objects living in that thread.
