FO-> DCF Script
We are generating AFP documents in mainframe by AFPAPI or DCF Script. We are
currently thinking of using XML to simplify our data generation process
before we generate any print stream. I am wondering whether it is possible
or any tool is available to convert from XSL:FO to DCF Script. Then we can
generate AFP from DCF script so that we can print the formatted documents
in mainframe printers. It is possible to generate XSL:FO as IBM has XML
toolbox for OS/390.
OS/390 also has some tools(InfoPRint) to transform from PDF to AFP. Hence
if we can generate PDF in mainframe, then it would be possible to print in
mainframe AFP printers. But I am not sure whether FOP or COCOON can run on
mainframe os390 web server with Websphere Application Server to generate PDF
for a given XML file.
I request your ideas
Thanks

Ok, I'll quote a case where a user needs editable documents. I did a project
where a customer had technical manuals marked up using IBM GML. the manuals
were printed using IBM Script and distributed as PDF. Over time, the
technical writers were replaced with a team who were proficient with
framemaker. So I had to convert all these marked up documents to framemaker
format.
Of course one way to do it would have been to write a filter to directly
convert it to frammeer MIF. the alternative which i used was to convert it
to docbook consistent sgml, and then used framemaker+sgml to output
framemaker docs. This way iam saved from the trouble of knowing the backend
tag (MIF) syntax.
So what iam saying is that in many cases where a user has to move from one
format to another, it is easier to convert it to xml and then the target
format (which is used for editing). So it is useful to have multiple output
formats, for xml+xsl.
You are right in that, a word processor doesnt need the area layout. So it
is a good idea to directly convert from FO to say RTF.

Just 2 remarques:
1 - The problem here is not to use or not XSL:FO, but to use the Area layout
system of FOP.
2 - You speak about editable documents. Ok, but I still don't know what it
really means. If you translate an XML file into another format, to help
users to edit it, you need to be able to do the reverse "operation", no ?
When the user has finished to edit the RFT document, what does he do ?
I think that the real problem is here.
Eric.
