Are you on github? What is your username? Im going to make a devicemap github repo.

Are you on twitter? Linkedin? etc

Great, thanks a lot. Maybe some smoketest on Jenkins that checks services
like these once a day would be a good improvement[?]

The audience is smaller but very motivated. Also saw another MeetUp called
"Web Dev BBQ" nearby, that I'll have a look at.

Cheers,
Werner

No, if someone wants to do the work for moving that can happen before
graduation. I'm happy to help finding the right info about how to do
it. I don't have time to help doing the move now, and I've never done
one so would have to look up the info.

That sounds fair, until a web or service based approach can be found, it
seems best to fix JIRA (make it possible to all or most committers to
manage a ticket, probably a marker for things like "device data" vs. "API")
then committers may apply patches or suggestions for better device data in
JIRA.

IMO if someone wants to move Devicemap to Git (with the main Git repo
staying at apache.org as required) then move everything: code, data,
the whole lot. Having some pieces in Git and some in svn would be a
pain (except for the http://incubator.apache.org/devicemap/ which can
currently only managed in svn).

> ...This sounds interesting: https://git-wip-us.apache.org/#git-at-apache ...

Those docs are not fully in sync with the reality IMO - Git support at
Apache is production-level, and many projects are using it [1] so no
worries switching but I don't have time to do the work myself right
now. Unless someone here can help directly, best would be to ask on
the general@incubator.apache.org for pointers on how to do the switch.
I haven't done such a switch myself so far.

> ...Though I suppose "Non-Committers" are still people who need to sign the
> Apache Contributor Agreement first, am I right?...

Signing the http://www.apache.org/licenses/icla.txt is required to
become a committer, but contributions can be accepted from anyone
provided that they are voluntary and that the project does due
diligence about the contribution's intellectual property. IANAL but
small bits of device data are certainly fine provided they're not
"stolen" from another project.

And if people contribute regularly they should sign an iCLA and become
committers. The PMC is free to elect whoever they want as committers,
the ASF does not specify how that happens.

Re: github

Please ask Bertrand, Kevan or others if they may assist you with that. I
can't say, how much sense it makes for the API repos to be migrated, so
maybe putting "data" to Git could be a good idea. I haven't looked into the
BrowserMap one for a while.

This sounds interesting: https://git-wip-us.apache.org/#git-at-apache
Though I suppose "Non-Committers" are still people who need to sign the
Apache Contributor Agreement first, am I right?
It nevertheless could allow easier contribution to let's say device data
related bugs compared to SVN.

WDYT?

Exactly, thats why I thought github may be a positive step. Its the opposite of private, its as public and open as you can get. OpenDDR found success on there, same with dClass. I was thinking the same for DeviceMap.

So it github a no go for DeviceMap?

Yes, I am on github, but I'm not going to be contributing anything.

There have been many git discussions at the ASF over the years. I confess
that I'm not in touch with the latest status/discussions. But I will do
what I can to help.

a positive step for the Devicemap community, from an ASF perspective.
Working with the local community, Incubator, and Infrastructure to

That is a problem with the JIRA configuration for the Devicemap project and
should be fixed. This should have occurred with the JIRA project was
created. I don't have any karma in the project, either. And don't have
admin privileges to fix it.

Can you create a JIRA issue against INFRA to have the problem fixed?
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA/

If there's a problem, let me know and I'll work on getting it resolved.

Re: github

Posted by Werner Keil <we...@gmail.com>.
P.s.: We have at least one or two unsolved issues in JIRA like this:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DMAP-24?jql=project%20%3D%20DMAP%20AND%20resolution%20%3D%20Unresolved%20ORDER%20BY%20priority%20DESC

As of now, only the person who created the bug can edit it I saw (in cases
I reported I could update or resolve them, every other is assigned to
Bertrand) and it lacks something like a "Component" where "Device Data"
could be differentiated from "API" or other parts of the project. Multiple
assignees or (JIRA) project managers would be good, then JIRA could be a
little more effective than the somewhat more simple GitHub system. Its
power are Pull-requests which are automatically created as issues and
closed when the request is accepted and merged. Otherwise I'd prefer JIRA.
I suggested a member who found his new Sony Android tablet regognized only
as a (fallback) smartphone he should either send me an email or raise a
ticket in JIRA. Of course existing tickets should be fixed. If the Device
Data could be migrated to Git I think it would be beneficial.

The API may not be such trouble in SVN, unless Dozens of people update it
on a regular basis

WDYT?

See before, if possible I'd also prefer subsequent Git repositories on
Apache.org, too[?]

Which as in one case (someone created a single Git repo earlier for DM
related stuff) is mirrored to https://github.com/apache

I agree with Reza, that especially for the Device Repo Git seems more
flexible with Pull Requests or (ideally if Apache uses it) Gerrit[?]
However doing so on the official Apache servers seems better, otherwise
we'd have a "fork" and people would be confused, just like some of former
Apache committer Stephen Colebourne's most famous projects that went from
"Apache Commons Money" (did not graduate) to "JodaMoney" on Sourceforge,
later probably Java.net and then to GitHub.
Confusing and alienating possible collaborators on where the most recent
version can be found.

Werner

yes, there is no visibility into any collaboration using the current svn. Moving dev over to github could give this effort some much needed momentum... Are you on github?

Since ODDR might be dead (trying to confirm this), having this project visible on github could provide a good transition.

Also, github Issues could be an easier way to manage, review, and add new devices to the device data. Its a great fit.

I have already created a repo and began work on the java client (I will send out another email regarding some of the issues im working on).

Can you explain, please? Is there a problem collaborating within the
Devicemap community?

@Bertrand, WDYT? See https://github.com/search?q=devicemap&ref=cmdform

At least Radu created something there earlier (the Sling port does not work
so far, I tried it before JavaLand[?]) and Wikimedia also hosted the
signature gathering tool, but is it the right sign to create a "DeviceMap"
org there?
