For tutorials and docs check out our website
http://james.apache.org/server . No books aviable.

To use JamesUsersJdbcRepository directly you whould need to correctly
inject stuff etc. 

For james 2.3.x ( and james-trunk if you want):
Maybe the easier way whould be to use http://commons.apache.org/net/ to
connect via telnet to RemoteManager and use the right commands to get
stuff done. 

For james-trunk:
You can se jmx todo most of management stuff.
