Write a manual line break (Shift-Enter) behind the first character. Then goto
the tab "Drop Caps" in the property dialog of the paragraph and enable it.
I know, this is a workaround for your special case, where you want a larger
first character.
The general request for allowing drop caps in one-line paragraphs is already
tracked in bug 67704 and bug 90381. But that would need a change in the spec.
