"Object map" mentioned in Velocity generator doc?

I'm interested in using Cocoon to generate content from Velocity pages.
The doc on the Velocity generator mentions that you can put items into
the Velocity context from the "Cocoon object map", but I can't find any
documentation on how to put objects into that map, or indeed on
what/where it is and so forth.  Any pointers, please?
