Non ASCII characters in commit message?

Hi all,

Just a quick question, whenever I try to put non pure ascii chars in a
commit message, like characters "é", "à", "ù", I get the following error:

svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: Can't recode string
svn: Your commit message was left in a temporary file:
svn: '/local/tmp/subversion/svn-commit.tmp'

Is that because my install is broken (I used libiconv 1.9.2) or
Subversion doesn't handle non pure ASCII chars at all (which I would
find odd)

PS: The system is a Linux Red Hat 7.2, with an inhouse compile of
Berkeley DB 4.2.52, GNU libiconv 1.9.2, httpd 2.0.48 and subversion 0.37

TIA,
Cheers,
Olivier.

Ben,

Yeah, that was it! I was using "C" as locale (because of some
incompatibilities with legacy UNIX apps when using other locales)

I switched to "fr_FR.ISO-8859-1" and it works. Thanks a lot.

PS: Maybe that could be added to the Subversion book, what do you think?

Cheers,
Olivier;

What's your native locale set to? Subversion assumes that your commit
log message is written in your native locale, and then tries to convert
the log message from native->UTF8 before sending the data to the
server. So if your native locale doesn't understand those characters,
that's the problem.
