Gee1 I want.... I'd like to see.... (fwd)

I remember postgres being mentioned a few times on this list a couple of
years back. Can anyone point this user in the right direction ?

I'm sending this to you as a member of the Apache Develpment Team,
cause, honestly, I can't figure out another way to get ahold of
someone...

this is, I guess, a IWANNA thing, If you tell me "I should develop this
on my own", then so be it, I'll give it a whack, but....

I'm curious as to why Apache includes modules to access DBM and mSQL
databases, but not Postgresql? Is there something about Postgres that
gives you a reason NOT to support it? Is a module in the works
somewhere?

Thanks for your time...
Regards

Agree.

+1

I guess the best of both worlds would be if an "official" mod_auth_mysql
was authorized by TCX and distributed with MySQL distribution. Then all
people with MySQL would automatically have the right auth_module available.

Ian Kluft proposed a more modular approach to auth back when we started
the 2.0 discussions after 1.2.0 was released. His suggestion boils down
to having modules which don't do HTTP-things, but do lookup-things. So
then we'd have a mod_auth, and configure it to ask mod_lookup_mysql to do
the lookup.

The result is far far far less duplicated effort.

While we are at it: it would be nice to include the mod_auth_mysql in
the distribution.

apache + mysql (+ php) together are a wonderful team and free too.

It also would solve another problem: recently there apeared a second
mod_auth_mysql with different runtime options and behavior than the
first one, which is a patched mod_auth_msql. I guess providing one of
them together with apache would make bugfixing easier.

The next step would be an API to do auth with a db and runtime options
that are the same for all databases.

No problem. I can stand a little rain... ;-)

MySQL allows you to do that with LOAD DATA INFILE:

http://www.tcx.se/mysql_docs/chapter3.html#LDI

mSQL 1.X doesn't. Not too sure about mSQL 2.X...

Good point, I stand corrected. I must have been mixing up PHP's access
logging with mSQL/MySQL/etc.. with HTTP auth access checking.

By the way, who is responsible for maintaining the module registry? Apache
1.2.1 is still being referenced on the above URL...

This has come up several times on the PHP list already. There is no
technical reason as such not to use Postgresql, but there is a performance
one. Apparently the overhead of setting up a connection is such, that is
it not advisable to use Postgresql for these types of operation. Nobody
has therefore taken the trouble to set it up.
