IRC Channels

Hello guys,

Our contributor team is growing and spreading out. For our day-to-day
communication, most of us talk in person, over Jabber, or on here. We also
have a large IRC community on #phonegap that has nearly hit 100 idlers.

Today I registered #phonegap-dev on the Freenode IRC server [1]. If you
idle on Freenode, please join the channel and I'll OP you. It would be nice
to see some day-to-day dev communication happening on the channel -
especially as our contributor team grows. In case you're wondering, I got
the idea from the jQuery Mobile team, who uses a similar structure with
#jquerymobile and #jquerymobile-dev

I've also registered (squatting?) #callback and #callback-dev. Again, join
and OP you.

IRC Channel Summary:

#phonegap - user questions and support
#phonegap-dev - contributor chitchat
#callback - update for #phonegap
#callback-dev - update for #phonegap-dev

I've been reading through the Freenode Philosophy and Channel Guidelines
[1].

As a heads up, I'll be adding the dev team to the ACCESS list but DEOP'ing
everyone. Whenever you need OP status (e.g. setting the topic), then you
can grant yourself OP status and DEOP afterwards. Freenode recommends this
in order to remove social hierarchy from the channel.

Once added to the ACCESS list you can...

Grant yourself OP status with:
/msg ChanServ OP #phonegap-dev mwbrooks

Remove OP status with:
/msg ChanServ DEOP #phonegap-dev mwbrooks

Christian, thanks for mentioning the ML / IRC etiquette. I definitely agree
that discussions need to happen on the ML so that there is a proper record
and opportunity for a vote.

I was thinking IRC would be used in a similar way to Jabber. General
chitchat, problem solving, and tossing around ideas before exposing them to
the ML.

Awesome, thx. Agree with Christian that significant discussion needs to go
in the ml, but irc is great for quick one-off discussions.

Speaking of the mailing lists, has anyone set up an easier-to-read mirror
yet? I use gmane.org for most of my easier-to-read ml services, not sure
if there's something easier/better.

Please don't OP me, since I barely know how to use irc :-)

Hello all,

IRC is OK for some chats, but please have in mind that all decisions
must be made on mailinglists at ASF. People here often say:"if it did
not happen on list, it did not happen".

Some projects use IRC to deal out the gory details, but when it comes
to a serious proposal they change to mailinglists. Votes of course
need to be done on mailinglists only.

Cheers,
Christian
