Hello,
 
Apologies in advance if this is not accepted fop-user etiquette or a breach
of the rules in some way. I am new to fop and indeed xsl. My pdf is working
fine and looks the way I want it to. I was just wondering if someone would
be kind enough to review it quickly and maybe point out things that are
wrong or if there is a better way of doing something or any potential
pitfalls.

No, this is absolutely ok. I think your XSLTs are looking quite good.
There's nothing that immediately catches my eye. The code seems well
structured. I'm sure you could do some nitpicking but if your code does
what it has to with acceptable performance you did a good job.
