Per the [discussion on the mailing list|https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/6e53bd13996d433fd6bb6943a7c586d851741ffdfcec737ed64db47f@%3Cdev.hive.apache.org%3E] I've created a branch {{standalone-metastore}}.  I'll be putting patches in there as they are ready.  As each one if reviewed and passes the tests I'll move the patch into master and rebase the branch up to current master.  This avoids the mega-merge at the end.
