Scooter's Rant of the month
Good Evening Group,
My rant of the month:
I have been a exclusive user of Open Office for the past 11 years. I
USED to use Microsoft's Office Suit, but my home business couldn't
afford the expense. My last usage was 2005. when OOo developed the
database I had no reason to stay with Microsoft. It wasn't because of
poor operation, it was due to Costs.
My comfort zone was shattered in 2010. Everything about Open Office was
in perceived danger of collapsing. [I know it didn't, but it seemed that
all that was familiar was about to disappear.] I'm a user of software, I
don't program.
I was worried that I'd loose an excellent word processor and spreadsheet
editor.
I have a perfect (paid for) PIM program that I am more then happy with
so the database part of OOo was no longer a big deal.
I'm not impressed with Apache Foundation. OOo just worked. AOO doesn't
most of the time.
I upgraded to AOO 3.4.1 today and the dictionary is no longer working.
This group is doing a wonderful job of helping us through these
teeth-grinding episodes of not quite together software; but it was never
this worrisome bad during the previous 5-10 years!
“If it ain't broke, don't fix it” seems to have escaped Apache
Foundation. And yes, I am complaining, I've had quite a few years of a
trusted GREAT program suit with nary a complaint, but I've lost my
trust. I assume Apache Foundation will get it back up and running
smoothly again, but gee-whiz how long is it going to take?
Newcomers to Open Office may start to wonder what's so great after
trying to deal with all these mishaps. I can no longer brag about Open
Office, at least not the Apache version. Maybe I should switch back to
LibreOffice, I didn't give it much of a trial. Not knowing where the
“real” OO went to.
I'm better educated on Open Office's history.
This is a great explanation of its History:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice
The inner circle turmoil must have been awful.
I'll wait it out a few more months. If REAL improvement starts to show,
I'll reassess.
Take Care.

See the first of the "Known issues" at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.4.1+Release+Notes
: just reset your user profile and dictionaries will work again. And
yes, remember that 3.4.1 it's still pre-release software, so please do
expect and report problems!

Andrea.

Some questions:
Which dictionary does not work? What language and country? AOO has several dictionaries.
When you open writer, is the icon containing an ABC with a wavy line below the letters highlighted?
If you have some misspelled words in a document, what happens if you click this icon?
What happens if you click it again?
Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids. What is listed as the language modules?
What is listed in the user-defined dictionaries?
What is checked in the Options list?
Right click a work in an open document. Select Character from the context menu. What do you see in the
box under Language? Does it have an ABC and check?

Good Morning Group,
Dan: My OS is WIN7x64 on a 64 bit computer.
I have only one dictionary and I also took the list's advice then
and now.
Rob: Thank You. I have reinstalled version 3.4.0 and wait for the "real"
upgrade.
By the way, Pre-Release 3.4.1 did fix the oddball Quicksart loading
of AOO's main screen.
The dictionary still not working even in 3.4.0. But it had been,
before I erroneously installed 3.4.1.
My rant is still valid.
Take Care.

Sorry, I seem to have missed this point. I'm not sure about Scooter's OS. I also have AOO 3.4.1 on my
computer (Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit).
My dictionary works. I think I may know why. When using AOO 3.4.0, there was a problem with some of the
English dictionary extensions conflicting with each other. On the advice of this list, I disabled all English
dictionary extensions except for the American English which I use. I think that problem was a failure of the
thesaurus working. I installed 3.4.1 over 3.4.0. Checking just now, I noticed that the same extensions were
disabled as were when I had 3.4.0 installed. I don't know if the earlier problem has been fixed or not, but it
may be Scooter's problem.

That's always been a recipe for stagnation. If there's good reason, a
good way, and enough effort available, I think one may need to move on
even without a consensus.

Absolutely. But "skilled" users having to reiterate for beginners time
and time again the same stuff that's often not even OO-specific has
often seemed to me a frustrating waste of effort. I certainly have found
in the past it's drowned out the "meat" of the list, as it were. Plus
the well-known issues about unsubscribed users, of course.
I've suggested in the past, and will say it again, that I think a reply
from some "intelligent" autoresponder for non-subscribers would help
everyone. Potentially, new users get a fast response that (hopefully)
would answer their query, plus information on how to access whatever
archives are around, plus information on how to subscribe if they still
need help. And for subscribers, less frustration in seeing the umpteenth
Q & A about 'how do I get off the list' for example, and more time to
address the real, significant issues.
Just my 2d-worth. But note that it can be done without even touching the
current list mechanism.

AFAIK the development of 3.4.1 has been focused on (1) solving these types of usability issues and (2) adding more languages as VOLUNTEERS make themselves known to help with translations.

Now that Thunderbird has stopped its development, perhaps we will have a fix someday for the bug about the multiple header. It will be easier then to spot non subscribed users. For the moment, a mere Ctrl+U when there is a high suspicion of non-subscribed sender will do, the volume of this list is not that heavy...
If there is no consensus, then things should remain as they are. Rejected emails will only increase the user frustration. This is bad publicity that we won't even notice. So better be able to monitor all those new users cases, it can help improve UX.
As for the rant, the forum has also seen a flood of posts about dictionary and thesaurus, together with startup problem. Sounds perhaps silly and small time issue for accustomed users but a real pain for new users. but well, this was the first release with Apache, I guess it will help improve the QA checks before a release.
Bottom line is: we should take care of the new users, by listening to their complaints (even through non-subscribed mails) and by avoiding the small glitches that can be viewed as show stopper by new users (because those problems should be basics that should not lead time loss trying to fix them).
And since Scooter is not really a new user, it also means that users can be very quickly fed up with that too...

I think that thread postdates the start of the 'apache era'.
I recall in the OOo days there were over-frequent discussions about
disallowing non-member postings. But arguments were put both ways, no
consensus could ever be reached, and by default the status quo persisted
- to allow unrestricted posting.

There was a thread about rejecting those mails, there was even
a "Moderation Rejection Experiment"
http://markmail.org/thread/ukrbtqysmejax5q6 but I don't recall in what
ended all these things. May be the list moderators can tell.

If you asked a question about the Bank Account that you don't have,

I'd be willing to wager that they also do not allow you to make deposits
to that account that you don't have.

+1 on that.
As an example to support that impression, note the operation of this
list server; e.g. people who are not members are allowed to post
questions, but since they are not members they cannot see the answers
to their questions.

And your problem with AOO is ?????? I don't have problems with either AOO nor LO. Of course, I only go
back to OOo 1.03. I also go father back to Star Office 5.2.
All I can say is, enjoy your rant because you have accomplished nothing. Well you can rant more, but how
does that improve AOO or LO?
